i have 2 friends whos favorite genre is rap but they're kinda casual so they have tons of terrible opinions

one of them has cole as their favorite rapper, and thinks "everything future and young thug have done has been done better already by fetty wap"
the other one thinks im overhating hopsin

    just as examples

"J. Cole is the best rapper alive."

I cringe every time I hear that statement.

Probably the generic "black rappers only talk about drugs, guns and sex but not Eminem" statement. Ran into that once or twice. I do remember someone saying 2Pac only rapped about weapons. Only examples i can really think of that i've heard in person.

When people try to tell me they like MGK or Hopsin....
I just show them that new music video of Hopsin in his tour bus with his shirt off microwaving a burrito. If they tell me they still like him I never talk to them again

i don't cringe when someone says that, but i agree that J.Cole is just OK. he's like a run-of-the-mill type rapper.

that being said.......wouldn't you agree that its very hard to argue who the "best rappers" are nowadays?

I use to say J. Cole is so average it hurts but after his last project I just think he's bad now. Like, yes, it's a hard question to answer because there are so many great rappers with so many different styles. I think any given year there's a group of acceptable artists to answer that question with: Kendrick Lamar, Vince Staples, YG, Freddie Gibbs, Future, Young Thug, etc. I wouldn't be mad if someone said any of those rappers were the best rapper alive because it's at least understandable. J. Cole isn't understandable.
