How does Jay Z get away with average projects and still keep his spot at 1 or 2?

He gets a pass more than most. Although I’m not a big fan so maybe I just don’t get it.

pultizer aside: think about Control verse, brought rap back from its drugged r&b flirations. but also reinvigorated musicality in rap, gave guys like thundercat a bigger platform. but, and ive said this re: eminem before, you dont need a legion of followers to have a legacy lol. artists can be singular, artists can codify certain trends.

i only post on this site for the bc 's---' takes lol

I wasn't saying kendrick doesn't have a legacy—he most certainly does. Just that as far as influence goes, Future essentially created today's mainstream hip-hop. I was mostly looking for responses from joeyp and timmy because they were discrediting future and i think a lot of people talk about kendrick in this light without having any real reasoning behind it. but good point about thundercat etc.

ps all my hot takes are correct

i think u were saying kendrick wasnt influential, hasnt influenced anyone lol. to the extent we can measure such a thing... you have been proven incorrect! and ya, both things can be true: future can have his (r&b infused) lane, kendrick his. i dont get the impulse online to play zero sum

and you know better than to pick on timmyt. he's special.

This doesn’t even really do his discography justice, Dynasty and Vol. 3 are nothing if not classics. Even his weaker albums have some some legendary songs on them.

Yes I think future is the most influential rapper of the decade, but no that doesn't mean I don't think kendrick was influential at all. Was I downplaying it? Yeah, and you and sav brought up some good points that I didn't think of! Joey said he thought kendrick was the most influential which was why i said future was more influential.

Right, YG's style is nothing like kendrick's but that album structure was 100% inspired by Kendrick's. As @Papa Alpha Andy brought up (:emoji_wink:), influence can be marked by more than just style of rapping!

No doubt GKMC laid the foundation for an unabashedly old school west coast album like MKL to take off in the modern day, but YG was was running with that sound before Kendrick came along. MKL refined it and took it to the extreme, but you can hear the foundations for that sound forming on the first Just Re’d Up tape and that dropped a year before GKMC did.

    INT. @Big Cuntry's Home - dusk

The front door opens and BC ENTERS. He's late 20s, handsome but developing a working class potbelly. He's dressed like he works inside a mine, and carrying his empty lunch pail.

BC sighs, exhausted. He hangs up his hat on a nearby coat rack.

ENTER: BC's wife, mid twenties, Indian. She looks like Narsh in drag, a housewife's dress and apron. She dries her hand on a kitchen rag, as if she's just been cleaning.

    BC WIFE:
Aw, Tay Tay. Dinner will be ready soon. How was your day, m'love?

    They kiss.

    BC:
Oh, good. Papa Alpha dominated me again. Yes, I capitulated. No, I don't want to talk about it. Is that brisket I'm smelling?

    -END-

Idk YG was still on that 4Fingaz party and club s--- most of the time. There's a few sprinkles here and there though. I think some others did it better, I can't remember the names.
