    It isn't at all though. Understanding the rationale behind the Civil War isn't merely racists v. non-racists is pretty standard. Not revisionist whatsoever.

    Again a gross oversimplification of the conflict and why it was fought. I mentioned former presidents who had pro-slavery sympathies. You know I don't need to start rattling off examples for why this is a slippery slope.

    Not sure why we need to use this word choice in 2017. Traitors against the federal government I guess -- but in these communities, these people are being celebrated for standing up to 'northern aggression'. I assume you know this, you don't have to do any intellectual martial arts to understand their POV.

    More rhetoric. I think it's clearly about remembering the past.

    ahhhh yes - of course this is your response. ("EVERYTHING IS HITLER") lazy thinking paulette! I shouldn't have to relitigate the Civil War with you lol (tho maybe... you are an immigrant afterall.....)

    fact is these statues are commemorating american war heroes with specific local ties, in most cases. i dont want to speak for them, but i imagine most of these soldiers were fighting the (also racist) north for political and economic rationales that went beyond "derrrr.... we love slavery". and even if they did, plenty of us presidents owned slaves, supported the institution etc. it's just whitewashing history, its culturally insulting and v v thick.

    (that said: if a community CHOOSES to remove the statues, fine! but increasingly thats not the case, particularly here.)

    mob rule is never a good thing, even if it is "understandable" [insert sanctimonious "it was understandable what happened to germany after the heavy post-WWI sanctions"]]

    it'd be one thing if it were a predominantly black crowd, frankly. but - so typical - the video i watched was a bunch of nauseauting white kids getting all riled up on behalf of experiences they claim to understand, but probably don't.

    he is pr himself, imo. guy constantly talks s--- about the right, then tries to belittle you for being a centrist?
    I think hes a militant liberal with Nazi views, but his cognitive dissonance wont allow him to see that.

    Nah, I think you're 100% right about that, I should have said that 'the act of lighting cars on fire and breaking restaurant windows isn't helpful to anyone' rather than 'any movement that...' It's honestly not that I think the end of stomping out white nationalism isn't worth the means of sacrificing some cars and shop windows in the process (because it most definitely is), but that people who are more in the middle and don't pay a lot of attention to this type of thing see this and view it as the same thing as any other group (ie, white nationalists) causing a ruckus. It's how we get people thinking BLM are terrorists and the apathetic 'both sides are crazy, I'm gonna do nothing' response.

    The conversation the guy who ran down people in a car had with his mom honestly sounds like a joke, but here's apparently how it went:

    In an interview Saturday night in Toledo, Ohio, with The Associated Press, Samantha Bloom said of her son James Alex Fields Jr., "I just knew he was going to a rally. I mean, I try to stay out of his political views. You know, we don't, you know, I don't really get too involved, I moved him out to his own apartment, so we -- I'm watching his cat."

    Bloom was informed by The AP reporter that the rally was indeed organized by white nationalists. "I thought it had something to do with Trump. Trump's not a white supremacist," she said.

    "He had an African-American friend so ...," she said before her voice trailed off.

    In an interview with The Toledo Blade, she said, "I told him to be careful. [And] if they’re going to rally to make sure he’s doing it peacefully.”

    "Like I said, I don't really talk to him about his political views," she said. "He just -- so I don't really understand what the rally was about or anything, so... I just know there was -- he did mention it was 'albright'? What is it? Al--?"

    The reporter then interrupts her, saying, "Alt-right?"

    Bloom responds, "Albright"

    The reporter then corrects her, saying, "No, alt-right. It's like alternative right."
