    @WPG

    Boxframe is too insignificant to be a classic, and a mixtape at that. If we're talking mixtapes, The Luca Brasi Story might as well be Gates' entry. I don't know if him or Starlito will ever be in position to drop something major. I feel like both let that moment pass. Not sure Gunplay ever got that moment to begin with.

    eh, gates is a MASSIVE star in the south and has an album coming out in a month. he has a bit of a window to drop one.

    (for the record, i think Stranger Than Fiction and the first Luca Brasi are right on that borderline of being a classic.)

    starlito has a low enough commercial profile that there's less of a ticking clock.

    i dunno re: boxframe. he was the biggest non-kanye rapper in the midwest for a good minute solely off that. either way, i'm sure he'll top it.

    @WPG

    Gates' recent efforts have not given me that confidence. Fair point about Starlito.

    pinata isnt a classic?

    Barter 6 just keeps getting stronger in my opinion. Every time I revist it...whats stopping it from being a potential classic?

    lol no
    i hear much more chicago in him than houston. who are you referring to?

    re: pinata, charlie said "without madlib."

    barter 6 is really good, i just think it's 85% of the way to being a classic. it doesn't have the undeniable single, the songs that unlock parts of him that weren't there before, etc. great effort nonetheless.

    word, missed that.

    Check isn't undeniable? Halftime? idk what "undeniable" really means in this context

    as for "unlocking" parts of him that weren't there before: "OD" seems like all you need imo.

    I dont think calling it a potential classic is too much of a stretch

    los is a flashy look-at-me mixtape rapper who plays to conservative east coast types who have fabolous in their top ten. his album songs are trite moralistic nonsense.

    Lold irl at that description.

    You can also throw him in with rappers that weren't mentioned in kendrick's Control verse, but still made a response .

    Why? An artist don't have to be big to make a classic?
    Or is young thug already big enough?
    Honest question, I'm new into rap and never experienced the dropping of a classic

    a classic has to have some degree of importance, sure. the adage is that it should change or define its time (or both). but albums often become important after they drop; in other words, an artist doesn't hit a certain plateau then have the keys to the classic machine. marci wasn't big when Marcberg dropped. thug is far bigger than he would have to be to drop a classic. (he already did with quan last year.)

    Tha Tour is one of the five best rap records made since, like, 2007. Barter 6 is merely a very good album that could have been vaulted higher if it had a huge undeniable hit or made some sort of palpable impact on rap.
