i kind of appreciate how you're trying to poke holes in the thing but you're reaching, and you're wrong. using words like "dickensian" or "orwellian" don't even really imply knowledge of the source material; they're used so frequently that they've just been absorbed into language. (the same could be said of "kafkaesque," but that's generally pretty douchey to begin with.) it's also not irrelevant to the topic at hand--it was used as a way of clarifying and describing thug's narrative style. try again next time.

    :what22: ofc it does

You have to know that Orwell wrote dystopian novels to understand how something is orwellian, and I've never touched a Dickens book in my life so I have no idea what dickensian even implies tbh.
They are literally never used outside of forums and blogs unless you talk to stereotypical college freshmen psuedo intellectuals irl. Therefore, bringing it up, even if it is relevant, gives off a college freshman-y vibe

Future is leading the pack, while Vince has the best album (next to Dre, and Kendrick)

yeah, sure--but you don't have to actually be familiar with any of his work. film and literature critics call things "dickensian" all the time; it's also a useful word in delineating or distinguishing rap music.

i get what you're railing against: rap critics who bring in disconnected material from more highly-regarded mediums for extended compare-and-contrast sessions are the worst. i'm totally with you. saying someone's writing "isn't dickensian" is not the same thing at all, and you know that. you're just trying to antagonize me, which is cute, i appreciate it.

You're welcome, like I said, never change pp

One minor gripe doe, you have to be at least passively familiar with the work. Going to use anecdotal evidence here: I've never read a Dickens book and never heard what they're about even in passing, I truly have no idea what the comparison represents because I don't have any knowledge of the author. Anyways I'm done pestering you

but you not knowing the meaning of a word doesn't negate WPG's point. that just means ur vocab sucks or has a few holes in it at least. u arent the standard for the general public lol

Yes but you still have to be aware of the general overarching concept of an author's works to understand them used as an adjective c'mon this shouldn't be that hard

i knew what Dickensian meant before i ever read one of his works. when i was younger than you. stahp lol

in fact, i could infer what the author's work would be like BECAUSE i knew what the word Dickensian meant first lol, not the other way around

I'm not saying you have to read their books. I'm saying you have to be PASSIVELY FAMILIAR with their work. You don't have to have even read a page, but somehow, through secondhand accounts or references in media, you have to get the gist of their themes. I'm not saying it's an uncommon word or whatever you were trying to imply, I'm saying that you have to have some knowledge of the root of the word to understand the word, whenever wpg said you don't have to know ANYTHING about them to understand the adjective. I'm just debating that minor little point. I even said it was a minor gripe

Orwellian and kafkaesque are both overused and trite. Ever since the wire Dickensian Rly rly broaches douche territory.

In no particular order, dre, drake and k dot take it out this year.

For real though, anybody who thinks future, thug and fetty are talented artists need to get their f---in ears checked and go see a psychologist while your at it. I dont give a flying f--- if you hear them everywhere you go. That doesnt make them good. It Just means the majority of people around you are shallow f---in r-----s
