Why does Drake get so much hate, especially on here?

Not a proper review but I wrote this back when it dropped:

I really love the cohesiveness and consistency of the album, and the more focused R&B approach (tho I wish it had not only more rapping but emotionally driven tracks like From Time, Look What You've Done, Too Much, etc.)

My biggest problem with the record is really the lack of any major highlight and the intro

I'm still catching up so someone may have said something already but Wayne was and still is far better than Drake, the analogy doesn't hold up because drake is an average musician making debatably above average music while wayne is one of the GOATs.

i dont listen to music as much anymore, i give opinions too rashly sometimes, @WPG posts are very detailed and i learnt to trust him when it comes to music most of the time, so when i say "my krazy life" is boring and he says "Album of the year"..i go "hmmmm maybe im missing something"....but again, i dont expect Drake fans to truly understand simple human logic that involves two people having an adult discussion and one part of the convo have the ability to change the other point of view

i guess in Drake language you call that "turn the L upside down now its a 7" ..f--king r-----ed line that means absolutely nothing outside of 2 years old playbook..jesus christ

A bit like this which I found on an old site

1. Cold Wind Blows – This is why fans were so excited about the possibility of Eminem and Just Blaze. The duh-duh-duh-dum-dum-DAH-DUM is a pitch-perfect way to build hype as we’re being blindsided by the beat. The moment he begins rapping it’s clear that he’s still on fire. My first listen had me slightly worried on a content level; this lyrically didn’t seem that far removed from Relapse initially, albeit with a much stronger, accent-free delivery. Subsequent listens revealed that he’s much more clever here than he was on Relapse (immature or not, the p-----footing line and the Michael J. Fox reference are pretty hilarious). I could understand how some could find the chorus grating, but I think it’s gleefully strange and a ballsy way to open such an accessible album.

2. Talkin’ 2 Myself (feat. Kobe) – If it wasn’t already clear, this marks the first obvious sign that Recovery is going to be a sonic departure for Eminem. We aren’t used to him rapping over beats like that, and using choruses like this, but it turns out that he feels right at home. One of the things that distinguishes Eminem from so many artists is his outright honesty. This is why Déjà Vu stuck out so much on Relapse; he touched on intensely personal subject matter that most certainly could have been kept private. But instead he’s utterly fearless as an artist, and nothing in his personal life is considered taboo. On this song, he flat-out dismisses his last two albums, and once again apologizes to his fans for releasing mediocre product, all the while admitting that he nearly dissed a current friend simply out of drugged-out jealousy (also admitting that he would’ve been crushed). People who point out that these aren’t the most lyrically jaw-dropping verses of his career (I’m looking at you, Domie) are missing the point; the content here is as honest and introspective as he’s ever been, and for that he deserves praise.

3. On Fire – The much-maligned Underground from Relapse got a whole lot of hate; some complain that it was about nothing. To paraphrase Roger Ebert: it doesn’t matter what a film is about; it matters how it is about it. The same applies to songs. Underground was about nothing, but its problem was an abundance of poorly-written, nonsensical lines, not its subject matter. To show the contrast, look no further than this song, which is also about nothing, but is far superior. Em’s satirical proclamations of being “on fire” during the choruses (“Man, I’m so f---in’ hot my fire truck is on fire, homie”) show flashes of the wit he had early in his career, and the first verse is particularly impressive. It’s a testament to the quality of this album that this is probably in the bottom tier of its tracks, because it’s entertaining as h---.

4. Won’t Back Down (feat. Pink) – When this song leaked, my thought process, which I believe I vocalized at the time, was that if this was one of the best songs on the album, we were f-----. But if it was one of the worst, the album could still be a classic. In reality, I suspected it would be somewhere in between, and my expectations plummeted. Luckily, somehow, someway, it is indeed in the bottom two tracks on the album. And yet there’s still plenty to like: Khalil’s aggressive rock-tinged beat is fantastic, Pink does a serviceable (if seemingly misplaced) hook, Em’s delivery is just fine, and the third verse is enjoyable as h---. This would’ve been better placed as a bonus track because it isn’t on par with most of the album, but it’s still pretty fun.

5. W.T.P. – Speaking of misplaced. Word on the street is that W.T.P. is an utter abortion, but it’s actually fun as club tracks go. The key though is that Em doesn’t need to stoop to club tracks, which is why I think there’s so much hate for this one. Judged on its own terms, it isn’t bad: the chorus is [without a doubt] undoubtedly infectious, the flow is pretty much perfect, there are some nice lines here and there (love that R. Kelly line), and the swagger on display feels surprisingly natural. Had I been creating the tracklist, my guess is that I would have left this one on the cutting floor or demoted it to B-side status, because it’s pretty clearly the worst on the album. But it doesn’t completely s---.

6. Going Through Changes – This was the turning point for the album on first listen; it was the moment I realized that Recovery could truly be something special, as opposed to a decent album with a few standouts, like Relapse. This is far and away the most personal song from a very personal artist. Eminem has bared his skeletons on multiple occasions, but this is probably the most honest and harrowing example yet. To say it’s the Déjà Vu of Recovery is pretty much accurate, but also shortchanges it. Déjà Vu was done with a bit of a wink, and was more of a narrative; it felt like it was out-of-body, like the perspective of an outsider. Going Through Changes covers the same topics (and more), but takes us inside his head to get a better idea of how he was feeling as he was falling asleep in the car eating 3 Musketeers in the rear seat. I haven’t even specifically mentioned the heartbreaking references to Proof, the self-aware acknowledgment of his yes-men d--- dealers, and the surprisingly mature and bittersweet verse dedicated to Kim, which feels like a perfect final chapter to that hypothetical book. Nor have I mentioned the brilliant production and Ozzy Osbourne sample. This truly is a perfect song and will go down as one of the greatest things Eminem has ever done.

7. Not Afraid – This song has been talked to death, and I think down the road it will be seen as great, but more in a symbolic way than an artistic one. Because if we’re talking artistically, it isn’t really a great song; the verses are marred with very bad punchlines that hold it back from achieving greatness. Symbolically though, it’s a turning point in stan history, as Eminem finally acknowledges the bad turn his discography took in 2004, and how disappointing Relapse was. Not only that, but it's the first single. There are certain points I love, particularly that Relapse portion of the second verse, and the chorus grew on me a lot; it’s pretty inspirational, although it certainly flirts dangerously with being pure cheese (as does the bridge). A good song, but not a great one.

8. Seduction – Was talking to Luis T.I. last night, and he brought up the idea (which originated from this board if I’m not mistaken, although I’m not sure who from) that this is actually about Em stealing fans from another rapper, as opposed to stealing a girl from her boyfriend. I initially dismissed this theory but Luis made a pretty strong case, and as I listened to it again I have to admit I absolutely buy into this interpretation and wish I had thought of it myself. It adds a whole new dimension to the song and I hope it’s what he intended. Even if that isn’t the case, the song as it is is utterly hypnotic and entertaining (let’s not forget to mention how fun it is to hear Em adopt Jay-Z’s classic “Awngh”).

9. No Love (feat. Lil Wayne) – Never would I have guessed that this sample could have been utilized this well, but I suppose if anyone could pull it off, Just Blaze is the man. Much has been made about Wayne being the only guest rapper on Recovery, and he certainly brings his A-game; it’s become clear that Wayne consciously steps up his game around Em because he simply knows he has to. Wayne has some great lines here. And yet Em still manages to take his verse out the beat and stomp on it; he starts off slowly but surely, and builds undeniable momentum as the beat does the same, and it all accumulates into one of the most satisfying and viscerally entertaining verses Em has delivered since his prime of 2000-2002. I’m glad he kept the guest appearances to a minimum, but this collaboration is basically perfect in just about every way.

10. Space Bound – In a lot of ways, Recovery is the artistic maturation I’ve been wanting from Eminem since 2003 but had long since given up on. More than pretty much any other track on the album, Space Bound proves this. Backed by one of the best beats he’s ever gotten his hands on thanks to Jim Jonsin, Em makes a song that is at once fiercely personal and open to interpretation. Is it just about Kim? Another woman? Drug addiction? Something else entirely? There’s almost surely a concrete answer to this, but he brilliantly wrote this broadly enough so the listener can draw their own conclusions and the song can mean very different things to different people. At the same time it’s clear that he’s rapping from the heart, with a sincerity that very few rappers can match. Like most people seem to be, I’m utterly enamored with this song.

11. Cinderella Man – People have been comparing this to Till I Collapse and other tracks where Em sounded hungry and motivated, but they’re missing a key component. Cinderella Man has something that few (if any) Em songs before it have had: triumph. This song often puts an utter s----eating grin on my face; it’s Em absolutely positive that he’s really, truly back this time, refusing to settle for mediocrity. And he sounds like he’s enjoying every f---ing moment of it. The production is superb, the chorus is great, and Em sounds so confident and natural on the verses that it’s almost impossible to dislike. This is Em in his element.

12. 25 To Life – Another song that might deserve to go down as a career highlight. The sample and the beat alone are stunning, and the verses seem as if they’re going to justify the existence of yet another Kim song. As the last few lines reveal the song’s true concept, it instantly becomes significantly better than it already was. Subsequent listens prove that he didn’t cheat at all; the writing is pitch-perfect to work as a failed relationship song at first glance, and yet also to perfectly address his own strained relationship with music. Yet another example of the sort of song I’ve been wanting from him for years.

13. So Bad – Makes sense that that post-Not Afraid momentum would slow at some point, and it happens right here. Luckily it’s still a good song. The beat is vintage Dre, the uncharacteristic swagger is once again present but plausible, and the chorus is catchy as all h---. Unfortunately the verses are several steps below most of the album, with a couple of good lines (the Entourage reference is fun), and a couple bad ones (“Ooh you’re the bomb baby…ooh you’re doing that even better than your mom lady” makes me rofl). As dumbed-down filler tracks go, I suppose I would prefer this to, say, Crack a Bottle.

14. Almost Famous – In the depressed aftermath of Relapse, a lot of fans insisted that it was foolish for Eminem to try to replicate Slim Shady, or any of his old material, because it wasn’t possible. He was no longer the same person. This song takes that perception and rips it to shreds, urinating on its remains. Em sounds possibly hungrier than EVER somehow, spewing profanity-laden punchlines with a furor we haven’t heard from him in years. DJ Khalil’s beat is the perfect fit for such energy, with a strangely perfect chorus to match. This is one of the tracks I find myself coming back to most. I can’t believe how uncannily he recreated his past on here, working with a concept but not allowing himself to be completely imprisoned by it and instead running wild.

15. Love the Way You Lie (feat. Rihanna) – If you had told me that Rihanna would have one of the best choruses on the new Eminem album, I’m not sure I would’ve believed it, but it’s something I think few would disagree with. The production is great (love that guitar in the background), I don’t know much of Alex Da Kid but he did not disappoint. As for the song in general, it’s just asking to be a generic commercial hit…but Em predictably puts his own personal stamp on it, elevating it to a higher echelon than it could’ve been. Great song that should and will be a huge hit.

16. You’re Never Over – Elephant in the room: the singing sucks. It doesn’t matter. This is the most heartfelt song of Em’s career, and an absolutely perfect tribute to Proof. The singing isn’t intended to win American Idol, it’s intended to communicate his inner pain, and it accomplishes exactly that. The first verse is pretty solid, but it’s the second one that makes it truly incredible, I don’t really have the words to describe its perfection. It’s probably the only time a song has gotten me so emotional I’ve felt like tearing up, it’s that powerful. I did not expect Em to be so mature and downright POSITIVE in his Proof tribute, “celebrating his life” instead of “mourning his death”, as he puts it. And that perspective is what elevated the song to the lofty heights it attains. A stone-cold classic and one of the most important moments of his career.

17. Untitled – As perfect as You’re Never Over is, it’s nice to end the album on more of a light-hearted note. Perhaps it’s because of the way I heard the album but I can’t imagine this being anywhere else. It certainly isn’t as essential as some of the other tracks here, but Havoc supplies a great beat and Em basically just has fun with it, pretty much just showing off and supplying a few more entertaining punchlines to end the album on. So much better than ending with, say, a Ken Kaniff skit or something.

fair enough, your review wasn't entirely glowing, but I still think going from a 6/10 (which is a good album) to "Encore level trash" is an enormous leap in a very short period of time
