Apr 26, 2016 im not, and yet i still have: a. a brain b. my own intuition (predicated on having seen snoop, pac, outkast, eminem, 50, wayne all blow on in my lifetime) u simply can't discount my opinion JUST bc im a few yrs older than you lol. like WHAT? it's not like im a dinosaur, ive been a casual rap fan since you were fiending for ur moms ti--y, and u should absolutely take stock in that. the only time elton john mattered in hip hop was when he convinced moms and dads eminem wasn't this evil homophobe. ironic ur discounting the opinion of a legend like myself in this context, yet blindly accepting the "co-sign" of someone who hasn't had a hit since princess diana died how many artists has ye cosigned? how many blew up to achieve even remote mainstream success? GOOD music isn't some automatic stamp of success lol, otherwise rhymefest would have won that alderman race. like cmon.... and the "amazing songs" thing just underscores how near sighted ur being. once again, i'm sure thugger can go pop -- but the argument is chiefly about how high he can go. it's simply ludicrous to blindly claim "well, he could potentially reach a height FEW ARTISTS EVER HAVE" -- like wtf are u (and @Narsh) even trying to say. stop being stans and recognize you both have overstepped. humility.
Apr 26, 2016 There will never be another Lil Wayne. But there will never be another Young Thug either. I do hope he does grow a stronger following in the near future, rap always could use someone like him pushing the genre forward. I don't think it's valid to dismiss how different hype is in today's society compared to what I remember during my middle school-high school days when kids would actively discuss rap releases at like lunch tables and s---. Sales and promotion are extremely different, and there are so much more avenues in listening to music now. Wayne was a machine, everything he touched turned into platinum and had a huge full-circle appeal from fans and critics. Being in NY at the peak of G-Unit's hype was unbelievable, to me no rapper will ever be as renown as Fifty was in that time period.
Apr 26, 2016 what do you mean? ya that was a hit but nowhere near weezy's string of success... if anything, it just shows there's a ceiling for rappers who aren't corporate hugged like drake. why is that so crazy?
Apr 26, 2016 @Narsh the mixtapes weren't searching for a hit per se, but there were test balloons: kush, diamonds & girls, etc
Apr 26, 2016 "No way anyone can say they can just put on 808s like other kanye albums" "Its universally agreed upon that 808s is one of his least accessible projects" *gets proved wrong* "Lol i was kinda just joking about that" f--- outta here narsh
Apr 26, 2016 All this is really saying is that you observed meteoric rises it doesn't change the fact that you're not in the right demographic to be exposed to and gauge the popularity of artists like Thug that have such a young fanbase. Travis Future Pusha Cole Drake Sean Desiigner Cudi Keef etc etc. Like I told Hasman, saying anyone could make it that level is a stretch, the point being made is simply that out of everyone doing it, Thug has the most potential based off the fact that he's gotten this far being the most dismissed rapper of pretty much all time.
Apr 26, 2016 Smh the first comment was literally meant to be my personal take on 808s posed in an incredulous manner, which, because you felt like f---ing w me, you took and ran with 808s IS one of his least accessible albums, don't remember you proving me wrong there. Yeezus and 808s.
Apr 26, 2016 Anyways we've had the same exact thread every 6 months since the sites opened lmao can't wait to do this again in October
Apr 26, 2016 I must be crazy or something because 50 NEVER seemed to be that popular here. @El Ares is it like a Houston thing or am I just dumb?
Apr 26, 2016 might make another post/update this one as i go through the thread, but this is what i pulled from the first page: he's in a tough position. they tried to make gucci cross over; his false starts/legal/personal problems don't hurt him with his core fanbase because he was so established before the radio attempts started. thug has less of a foundation. on the other hand, thug's shown absolutely tremendous success/instincts (lifestyle, good times). i would also argue that the way he's become a lightning rod for criticism/debate helps keep him in relevant on a level that some rappers with better sales (logic, for example) will never hit. so he'll keep having opportunities. this sounds exactly right. this is clinically insane
