Jul 15, 2020h--- yea. Appreciate you guys responding. Looks like I’ll have my next show to watch. Like you guys said, I’ve heard great things about the first few seasons and then a so-so response about the last few seasons. I remember being in like middle school and this show being the biggest thing going. I think I sort of know how it ends (if that purgatory thing is true), but I already knew how The Sopranos ended before I watched that as well, and it didn’t take away from the show in the slightest. So I’m excited to get into this

I can see why Mad Men wouldn't be for everyone, but I think it's amazing. It's created by one of the main writers for the Sopranos if that helps. It's def slow to start and there's not as much action as the Sopranos of course, but it deals with some of the same themes regarding existential dread, depression, etc. except it was the 60s so doctors just prescribed you more Lucky Strikes. Stick with it at least halfway through season 2.
You gotta give yourself more credit man—I'm sure being far removed from that life and group helps a ton, but it's your own resolve that keeps you from trying to find and contact those people.Ordinary Joel, Worm and Buddha like this. -

d--- glad to hear you have 10 years clean man. That's impressive that you have that willpower.
He has a different book where he rode with the cops called Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets. It was also developed into a network TV show, I've never seen it though and only read a bit of the book.Ordinary Joel, lil uzi vert stan and Buddha like this. -

I read the book which is a great read, you can really see how it formed the basis for the series. Bought the DVD of The Corner and watched the first ep but never finished.
BTW: Brother Mouzone's security who always forgets to bring him his magazines is played by the guy David Simon followed around Baltimore for the book, DeAndre McCullough. He sadly OD'd a few years ago.

The biggest g--- is BGF Black gorilla family. You may remember a few years back an inmate at Baltimore city detention center was found to have f----- and impregnated a bunch of female COs. He was BGF and they were essentially running that jail. Def that was the culture there for a bit: the g--- problem now isnt as bad as it was in maybe 2015, they assess ppl heavily for g--- affiliation at intake to keep them separated . Or try to. Ofc one large issue is this weird subculture in the inner city black community there where a lot of the COs went to high school w the inmates, know their cousin or something. Strange power dynamics

My first run through I hated season 2 as well, but on repeat watching I started liking it more and more. I still put it near the end in my ranking but ahead of 5 which isn't saying anything bad with how great the series was. McNulty's character really jumped the shark in season 5...and just remember, with no season 2, there's no Fuzzy DunlopOrdinary Joel, DKC and lil uzi vert stan like this. -
