Feb 26, 2017 i think the race is closer in reality than it should be in merit. denzel in fences was an absolute force.
Feb 26, 2017 i went to go see fences during with my ex after an amicable but tough break up, and i didn't know if i was more sad about losing her or the movie itself. unreal performance by denzel and viola davis too for that matter.
Feb 26, 2017 So what exactly makes that an invalid opinion? It may not be common but nothin about it is outlandish. It's not like you can make a point about how I'm not well versed in American cinema, because I'd put money that I've delved way deeper into it than you have.
Feb 26, 2017 well, no, we're not going to turn this thread into a d-ck-measuring contest. but you're making a claim way out of proportion with the general critical and popular reaction, which is totally fair, but seems flippant and easy to disregard when you don't give any sort of an argument. so...why?
Feb 26, 2017 Well first off, I was simply stating my opinion on the film and not attempting in any way to argue for it or imply that anyone else should agree with me. The film holds a very special place in my heart because it came to me at the end of a long period of depression that mirrored the main character's and I feel that it is the most honest and nuanced depiction of that mindstate ever put to film. Lonergan is a master of crafting living human beings on screen and this is by far his biggest accomplishment, taking the formal brilliance of his first feature and the ambitious nature of Margaret and striking a perfect balance between the two. Casey's performance is massive because he isn't interested in showing off his acting chops and simply becomes the character, it gives off an honest vibe that is so rare in cinema to me, the only other actor that comes to mind in that regard is Joaquin Phoenix. The same goes for all of the actors in the film, especially Michelle Williams, who has been among my favorite actresses oat for a long time now. The film is just so modest and subtle and never tries to be anything more than that, it captures the essence of all the best American cinema to me. So basically, I don't expect anyone to agree with me, nor do I care if they do; the film just really speaks to me and I hold it in very high regard. I think it'll stand the test of time much more than the majority of American films that have been released this year or any of the year for that matter. It's a big vibe.
