Sep 7, 2020This was...a yay for me
It was never going to live up to the stratospheric heights we built the album to be. That Detox mythos grew into this imaginary monster that would never be vanquished, but at the same time there were fleeting moments in the albums (Gone, Deep Water, Diary) that honestly made the years of absence worth waiting for. The engineering was great, the guests rose to the challenge as they always do on a Dre album and even if there was no Still DRE or Nothing But a G Thang, Compton felt like one of those last major events in hip-hop where it didn't matter that much if it was that good, at least you were there to witness it happening.

There were no big singles from it so there's no Forgot About Dre or Nothin But a G Thang to enter rap canon/songs that normies know.Fire Squad, Michael Myers, RetiredAccount and 3 others like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

Yay, album holds up better than it probably should, it's cohesive as h---, similar to Yeezus in that it's hard to listen to any one song from the album without playing the others. Would even go as far as to say that while it doesn't have the ridiculous highs of 2001, it's a better front to back listen.Fire Squad, lil uzi vert stan, Ordinary Joel and 3 others like this. -

Strong yay.
It took a while after So Far Gone dropped for me to get on board with Drake - at first I was just disappointed Wayne's big protege was so blatantly poppy and sappy but begrudgingly found myself enjoying it more and more over time. TML was such a huge disappointment that I still havent returned to lol. But Take Care took me back to the SFG Drizzy. 40 and co built the perfect atmosphere, the features were all outrageously good. And undeniably one of the most influential albums of the decade.

I think I'll always view Take Care with rose-tinted glasses because of the time in my life when it dropped, so I'm never sure how objective I can be lol. But I say Yay.
The Weeknd, Drake, and 40 really began to tap into that broody Toronto atmosphere that got refined further on NWTS and IYRT. In terms of his hour+ records, it's really the only one that fully justifies its run time. More Life I give more leniency because of its radio mix like format, but there's some chunks I'd shave off there for sure.Fire Squad, Ordinary Joel, Altereagle416 and 3 others like this. - May 1, 2025
