Jan 3, 2015 Who is the Top Dawg of Top Dawg? The safe choice is Kendrick, but I'd argue that both Ab Soul and Schoolboy Q only need one more good project to be back in the running, and both Isaiah and SZA have potential. I've heard Jay Rock is dope but I haven't had the chance to check his s--- out. Personally, it's a tie between Quincy and the Black Lip Pastor. Like kendrick has had the opportunity to prove himself more, while they both have only had one slip-up. Edit: Poll Added
Jan 3, 2015 I mean I guess I'm going with the safe choice of Kendrick. Soulo is off on and for me now, Schoolboy and Jay Rock are around the same level for me but not at Kendrick's spot. Jay Rock might be a bit higher then Q, but that's only being bias because he's the first of Black Hippy I learned about.
Jan 3, 2015 Kendrick Discography from KLEP to GKMC is near flawless Jay Rock has crazy dope features and I really enjoyed Follow ME Home <<----dope imo Q has a great body of work they are all good projects. and personally i feel he has gotten better with each project or he at least matched habits & contradictions for me Ab-Soul has control system which imo is as good as GKMC. but he doesnt get shine also longterm mentality is great as well. his gfeatures are great. the only problem with some of his s--- is his beat selection. skill wise he is as good as kendrick Zay has a great mixtape and 2014 aoty for me with cilvia demo SZA has great vocals and great projects too. you should check Z out its hard to pick but i choose kendrick because of the body of work he has put out has been near flawless if not flawless i can listen to KLEP to GKMC without skipping
Jan 3, 2015 I feel like Schoolboy Q and Ab Soul should make a Mellowhype type subgroup and start dropping s---. Druggys Wit Hoes 1 and 2, Sopa and Hunnid Stax were all top notch songs imo, and their chemistry is great. Imagine like a version of Double Standards where Q tackles the subject of sexism, but in like a "gangsta" fashion (lol I know that sounds corny) by like talking about the moral dilemmas of like being a p---- and living a dope lifestyle but doing it at too great a cost, or something like that. Or imagine a version of Break the Bank where Ab comes in halfway through and spits some crazy s--- about the banks being corrupt so he doesn't feel bad about "breaking the bank". Idk that's like a literal dream team in my opinion.
Jan 3, 2015 Soul is lyrically always been better than Kendrick and Control System is still my favourite TDE project from everyone. However, Kendrick has the whole package and seems to only get better.
Jan 3, 2015 Q is really inconsinstent imo, he has some dope verses (like in Blessed, or his songs with Rocky and a few others) but especially Oxymoron was really mediocre, I expected a lot better. I've only listened to 2 Jay Rock projects, his album and Black Friday, both were very good. I like everything by Soulo except from These Days which was bad. Control System and Longterm 2 are my favourites, CS is probably the best non-Kendrick project, along with Cilvia Demo (which I rate slightly lower than CS). SZA's Z was good but she hasn't impressed me yet, is it her only album? Rashad has potential ofc /votes Kendrick
Jan 3, 2015 Have you listened to Setbacks? Excellent project from start to finish, and HnC's only flaw was that there were too many songs, so ofc a few are gonna be of lower quality. Wholeheartedly agree that Oxy was highly forgettable for the most part, but if he'd released it as like an EP with the 8ish good songs on there it woulda been 10/10. Quincy just needs to go back to dropping standard sized albums and he'll be golden imo
Jan 3, 2015 Yeah I've listened to both these. Setbacks is his best, I agree, H&C gets really tiring for me to listen to all the way through. I liked most of the tracks that we had gotten before Oxymoron (h--- Of A Night, b-----r etc) and Gangsta, Collard Greens, Studio and some others. He could be good if he stayed focused
Jan 3, 2015 I personally feel he's at a point where he hasn't made a perfect album yet, but with Setbacks he proved that he could come close. I feel like he's probably not gonna be one of those dudes who can put out full projects, so if you can swallow a couple bad tracks sprinkled in, you can find some truly great gems.
Jan 3, 2015 Just because Soulo raps about some crackpot, third eye, thirty seven shakra type s--- doesn't mean he's a better lyricist. For every good punchline, he's got one just as bad and forced. He definitely tries the hardest, but let's not act like he's head and shoulders above somebody like Kendrick who is way ahead conceptually.
Jan 3, 2015 Kendrick is by far the best member. Rock is 2nd but schoolboy is up there on his own merits Soul is the worst member
Jan 3, 2015 The staggering amount of quality they've given us in a few years is applause worthy. Voted for Duckworth since he's been very consistent conceptually and project wise. Q has made some very enjoyable music but is missing that extra something that could propel him to the top, Soul is possibly as skilled a lyricist as Kendrick but outside of Control System I feel his talent isn't translating to his albums as good as it should. Isaiah Rashad has potential and imo made the best project in the camp post-GKMC. Anyone mind recommending me what to listen to from Jay Rock? Haven't given his music a fair listen yet.
Jan 3, 2015 Follow Me Home (his album) and Black Friday are very good, I haven't listened to anything else though, didn't know that he had other mixtapes until I saw the sticky in this section.
Jan 3, 2015 Preciate it fam, I didn't want to give a short summary of Rock without listening to any of his music before. He's bodied every feature I've ever heard from him
