For it to be within 5 years, we'd have to have some competing mediums atm.
Digital and physical serve different purposes. We might see a scaling down of physical, but that's all.

Hope they're still available for a while, at least the option to order them online or something cuz I don't have any interest in paying for digital music most of the time. I'd rather either buy a CD or just download it for free.

People still buy Vinyles, so CDs have some good years ahead of them

People use physicals to have it in hand. I don't think that well stop for a while. If it does stop I don't see it for another 10-20 years

I think 5 years is realistic considering how the number of CD's sold per year is shrinking at a ridiculous rate

Anyone know any lesser known artists or groups that have stopped doing physical copies already? It wouldn't shock me.

5 years is nothing. 5 years is easily predictable, thus cds becoming obsolete in 5 years should be pretty clear as day right now if it were to be true. When people are talking about technologies and new replacing the old entirely, then they are thinking in atleast a 10-15+ year perspective.

Most people still want something physical in order to have something that the illegal downloaders cannot have. Thus people are still seeking to get something comprehensible for their money. Digital either has to become dirt cheap (really mere cents for a track) so it becomes a realistic budget alternative to a physical copy. It has to be cheap enough to not be worth (searching for) the illegal (free) download or just so cheap that you don't even bother thinking about spending money. Right now it still isn't for the most part. Downloading something illegally is so easy that most people just do not see the added value in buying digital music. You can form the argument of supporting the artist, but most people listen to pop anyway, where most money goes to either big label and the little goes to the pop artist itself (who is already wealthier than his/her core audience). Basic logic is that most people want something more for their money than just the music. That's why everything (including performances) has gone from just presenting your music to putting on a overall show

It's for sure got more then 5 years, people still buy vinal records frequently. I personally still buy some CDs because I enjoy having the physical copy of an album that I really like and I still think they're still people out there who feel the same

5 years? Try 50. Something like 30% of America still doesn't even use the internet and other parts of the world are much lower
