Jun 28, 2016 I know I was. Hearing my friend listen to Lose Yourself was the first time I ever got excited about a rap song. Then dove quickly into his discog. and became a fan. For a while it was strictly Eminem (which unfortunately seems to be the stage some of you are stuck on). Then of course I started diggin other aftermath people. Took me a while to embrace the trap wave but now I pretty much enjoy all aspects of the rap genre. Wondering if y'all had any similar experiences? Based off Em's popularity I would think he's responsible for bringing in many new fans to the genre.
Jun 28, 2016 He made me like it more, and made me migrate from the s--- local music that was in decline at the time. But in terms of introduction to the genre, that would be weezy. Was a massive thing in jamaica when a-milli dropped
Jun 28, 2016 Not me, the first rap song I remember ever hearing was sugarhill g---'s rappers delight, one of my brothers played it for me. Then around the time California Love came out I remember sort of liking that song too, I have 2 older brothers so I kinda discovered rap really young. Shortly after Biggie died I remember liking the mo money mo problems song too. First ones I really became a fan of and was interested in though were Cube and Eazy's solo stuff, NWA and ICP.
Jun 28, 2016 sounds like a good time to grow up I'm only 16 but I got mad respect for 90s rap. Wish some of todays rap was just a little more influenced by it.
Jun 29, 2016 that's pretty dope i didn't watch 8 mile until I had already been a fan for a while the thought of battle rap being someones first glance at hip hop
Jun 29, 2016 Soulja Boy's Crank Dat, Biggie's Life After Death, Wayne's I Am Not A Human Being and Kanye's MBDTF were my introduction, but Em got me into more artists.
Jun 29, 2016 I actually now remember being 8 years old and Crank Dat was my favorite song Idk if that counts tho My love for Kanye didn't come until about a year ago, I'm arguably a bigger fan of him now then Em. MBDTF greatest album off all time btw Life after Death is but i'm more of a ready to die kinda guy as for Wayne it took me a while to come around to him but once I realized his greatness he instantly went into my top 5
Jun 29, 2016 Even for those who don't care for Em anymore, there's quite a lot of them who were introduced to the genre or other artists by his music.
Jun 29, 2016 Some young folks in this thread. Hip hop, and music in general, was only ever something I heard on the radio when I was young. The first couple of hip hop songs that caught my attention were Gangsta's Paradise and Ghetto Superstar. A couple years later I first heard Eminem and that's when I really got into hip hop. SSLP and Ryde or Die were the albums that made me want to rap myself.
Jun 29, 2016 you rap? I make beats, check out my thread https://forum.sectioneighty.com/wat...-type-beat-out-now-official-mw-thread.t48682/
Jun 29, 2016 It's hard to say. He was definitely the first hip hop artist I followed consistently. I have a feeling Gangsta's Paradise was my first exposure to it. My mum dug that song and thought it was the first big proper rap song, which in regards to a middle aged Australian woman that'd probably be an accurate statement from that sort of demographic's view. I was always aware of Eminem but as a young kid and living through his peak you were brainwashed by adults into thinking he was the devil due to how big and controversial he was but I remember vividly hearing Sing For The Moment in a mate's car and loving it and realizing that's what Eminem was and properly starting from there. I was aware of him prior to that but just thought he was some novelty act as I'd only heard (I think) My Name Is briefly and seen ads for his concerts with the cartoon Slim Shady just thinking he was almost some controversial comedian going for shock factor (probably not far off the truth in some ways). I was aware of people like Nelly and Ja Rule etc. prior but I almost saw them as sorta more cooler gangsta-ish pop stars in my head, as at a young age I only had the impression rap was some hardcore almost subculture and all those radio hits I didn't necessarily associate with what I thought Hip Hop/Rap was.
Jun 29, 2016 Dope. The first one and the "Got to Give" one with the girl on the chorus are right up my alley. Maybe we can get something going. Check out my latest on Bandcamp:
