Your question is your answer man, EQ and Compression is the two things that will make your vocals sound crisp. If you're looking to get some music produced at low cost, I'd be more than willing to do it for you. I'm willing to negotiate prices, just make me an offer. They are three different books from the "For Dummies" series that explain amateur music production in great detail. I'm sure one of them will explain EQ and compression better than I can in one message!

Yeah find somewhere on your recording software where you can see real time audio levels and start talking into the mic and adjust your mic volume settings until you're not quite in the red but almost. Even if it means bringing the levels below middle. It's ok if it's not super loud, when you go to master you can fix that during compression.

Keep your mic at 0db and fine tune the settings on your computer. Go to your volume control settings (the one from clicking Start, control panel, audio settings) and make sure under the advanced settings tab the mic boost is disabled. This mixing control is your basic audio control for your computer so it should get you set then do the fine fine tuning from whatever software you're using to record.
