    Purple Mountains - Self Titled

Really liked the Silver Jews record, excited to see what this project has in store!

That's Just The Way That I Feel is an incredible opener, i can choose lyrics to praise but id just quote the whole song, very good instrumentation as well. He has a very good way of conveying the comedic nature of being a functioning depressed person such as myself lmao

All My Happiness Is Gone keeps up with momentum with another great track the second verse is espeically great. "Where nothings wrong and no one's asking, but the fears so strong it leaves you gasping" hit me like a truck.

Darkness and Cold stays with the same quality, its a bit less self depreciating so it didnt hit me as emotionally as the other two but its still immaculately written. Really love how warm this record sounds so far. Reminds me of some of the older country music i love.

Snow Is Falling In Manhattan feels like one of the least overtly personal of the bunch but its very soothing, adore the pace of this one and quite like how vivid the imagery David portays is on this. 3rd verse is my favorite and brings the song together thematically.

Margaritas at the Mall is f---in incredible, the lines about god are some of my favorite lyrics on the album. Love the horns on here as well.

She's Making Friends, I'm Turning Stranger continues the flawless streak of this project. Even if i can't exactly relate to this one lyrically it does convey a feeling I've felt thats at least close to this. Truly a generational lyricist.

I Loved Being My Mother's Son is something i DEFINITELY can't relate to but this song is so melancholic and sweet man. It's always easy to say this after the fact but a lot of these songs are so deeply sad in nature that I'm unfortunately not surprised he committed, Its so f----- man.

Nights That Won't Happen is the perfect follow up to the last track, i think this might overall be my favorite lyrically. "This world is like a roadside inn and we're the guests inside. And death is a black camel that kneels down so we can ride." Is so good

Its getting boring saying every track is great but Storyline Fever hasn't broken the streak yet. I don't have much interesting to say about it, first verse i related to heavy. Outro on this one is super pretty.

Maybe I'm the Only One For Me is the perfect closer, one of the more relatable tracks on here for me and just a deeply depressing song despite how much i love the sound lmao. Almost had me shed a thug tear on the first and last song.

Overall i think this is maybe one of my favorite records ive heard from this thread. Everything about it feels so raw and what i wish most country/alt country sounded like. Incredible from top to bottom. @Yeez da goat

Favorite Songs: That's Just the Way That I Feel, All My Happiness is Gone, Margaritas at the Mall, Night's That Won't Happen, Maybe I'm the Only One For Me

    RIPPER ROO’S RATING: 7/10

This band is really great at balancing soft and hard, it’s like God and the devil being represented via music so the title of the album makes sense. A lot of times the song will be soft and then suddenly a musical jumpscare will happen. It makes for a listen that keeps you on your toes. Those guitars go hard af during the jumpscare sections of the album.

There’s a few songs I didn’t care for as much like “Sowing Season (Yeah)”, “Welcome to Bangkok”, and “Untitled”. “Untitled” is especially something I’ll probably never go back to. It’s a cool little experimental moment I guess but I didn’t find hearing the instrumental in one ear and muffled voices in the other ear very entertaining or interesting.

Despite that, I think this is a good album. There’s no bad songs here and the band does enough to differentiate itself from every other band. There’s a lot of lyrics here worth looking into deeper. The vocals can be quite enjoyable. The instrumentation is top-notch like I said before. @AOTWClub

One of my potential picks was "Getting Killed" by Geese so this would've been a crazy coincidence following GUTS lol

I was thinking, remember the listening sessions we used to have on the forum awhile back? Had the idea maybe after the album round, we can go that route?

I actually haven't heard either, I was thinking of picking GK so that I could experience it blind with the rest of the group. Do you think it's a good starter, or is 3D Country better?

I prefer GK but both are pretty d--- good. 3D country has more energy and vocal range to it though.

The reason I put GK over 3DC is, for the most part, cause I feel like the songs are more memorable. Higher highs and all y’know.

We used to do it on the durag discord server @jankland and @Wreckless took part in a bunch. We done the same s--- on HHS too.

We each pick an album basically same as what ur doing now except we all listen to it together at the same time live. Can be a b---- due to timezones but we used to make it work.
