Senim Silla - The Name, the Motto, the Outcome Review:

This was another artist and album I’d never heard before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect going in. It ended up being a smooth, easy listen from start to finish. Underground conscious hip-hop isn’t usually my preferred lane so it’s probably not something I’d play all the time, but I still appreciated it for what it was. Overall, it’s a solid hip-hop album and definitely a good listen.

    8/10

Favorite tracks: V for Vesper, Brothers Killed Malcolm, Less than Capital

    review

I’ve never really heard of this artist before so that made going into this album very exciting. I’ve recently only had time to play music during gym, and I gotta say; pairing my workouts with these underground, jazzy and at times soulfull hip hop tunes went much better than you’d expect.

I had a ton of fun with this record. The whole thing is very well made and engaging to listen to. I’m happy to report that not only did I save a ton of these tracks, but there weren’t really any bad songs on here either.

Some of my favorites include: V for Vesper, Less Than Capital (this s--- is fire), The Awakening (love, love, love it), and Breaking the Law.

    8.5/10

You know when you’re first starting gym it makes sense to play the heaviest s--- you can get your hands on… but as you keep going you find yourself at the pec deck blasting midwest emo wondering what the f--- happened and why this is doing more for you than 50’s Many Men ever did lool.

First time hearing this guy and yeah… this is NOT an easy entry point. This album feels like you just walked into the middle of someone’s long monologue.

Production is dusty, lo-fi, kinda raw. Has that old underground feel, but not in a nostalgic way, more like it just never adapted. Works for the vibe though.

Lyrically he’s questioning/touching on a lot of topics frequently. Political, personal, philosophical… but it can get overwhelming fast. Not many standout punchlines or hooks to grab onto, it’s more about the overall message than moments.

That said, it’s consistent. Not a lot of obvious filler, just dense all the way through. You either lock in or it loses you.

    Favourite tracks:
    • Keep It Coming
    • Less Than Capital
    • The Awakening
    • Brothers Killed Malcolm
    • Rear Window
    • Wild Life
    Least favourite:
    • Intro
    • A Light to One’s Self (Interlude)
    • The Violence Inherent in the System (Interlude)
    • Outro
    • Yeah
    • For The Record
    • I Hate Him
Overall, it’s more about ideas and consistency than standout songs. Respect it more than I actually enjoy it, but I can see it landing harder if you’re already familiar with his work.

    Hail the Sun - Wake
When a member chooses an album for the club, I often like to look back at their previous picks to (try) to get a feeling for what the album could sound like. I'm starting this review off by mentioning this, mainly due to the variety of picks that Jank has had in the past. There are some albums that i have absolutely loved like Cilvia Demo (which I've revisited pretty frequently, and I wish I could retroactively bump my score up) and Egotrip, but there are also some records that I haven't really connect to as much like the BMTH album. Still, I have always appreciated Jank's picks since they've always had us venture into bands and subgenres that I probably would've never ventured into otherwise. Now, a lot of my friends back in HS used to love Hail the Sun, so even though I hadn't heard a single song before, I was still pretty excited to hop in.

"Rolling out the Red Carpet" was a nice little intro, and I love how seamlessly it transitions into "Human Target Practice", which is a great track with some killer guitar work. I was a bit iffy on the Donovan Melero's vocals at first, but I think that they're mostly pretty good. I'm not sure if this sounds odd, but I found myself being pretty lukewarm on the more loud/energetic vocal sections, but I absolutely loved when they were more mellowed out. "Black Seratonin" is a pretty good example of this, as I absolute love the vocals during the break near the end, but I found myself being more neutral on the chorus. Based off the title I didn't expect the song to be based on the Amanda Knox case, but I think it worked as a whole [sidenote: I hate that most of my knowledge on the Knox case is due to her appearance on The f---ing Adam Friedland Show lmaoooooo]

I was a bit less enthusiastic with "Mourning Sickness", but I liked "Falling on Deaf Ears" from the very start. I'm not very good at describing what I like about music in an "instrumental sense", but I really do have to show out how great the sound is on this album. The drums are great all around, and the guitar works is sublime. I know that I previously said that I wasn't too big on some of the screamy vocals, but they work great on "Cosmic Narcissism". "Disappearing Syndrome" probably has my favorite drumwork on the record. Near the end, I found "Jane Doe" to be pretty nice and surprisingly relaxing (at least sonically), and "Anti-Eulogy..." was a pretty nice closer.

Overall, I had a pretty good time with Wake. I do think that my mixed opinion on the vocals impacts my enjoyment a bit, but I still think it's a pretty solid record. Big thanks to @jankland for the pick, and yeah
FAVORITES: Black Seratonin, Falling on Deaf Ears, Cosmic Narcissism, Disappearing Syndrome, Jane Doe

I noticed someone mentioning interludes. The version I added on Spotify didn't have interludes?

    Aight,

I'll be perfectly honest. When I heard the first song, I was like this is smooth as f---. But at the same time I had high hopes the album wasn't just gonna be songs like this.

V for Vesper already replied to that, much more upbeat and a catchy as h--- hook. s--- slapsss!

The rest of the album kinda switches up more relaxing songs and more upbeat/catchy ones but every single one of them is solid.

From Less than Capital to Breaking The Law is my favorite part of the album. A perfect 5 song streak. I Hate Him and V For Vesper other favorites. Which is basically more than half the album.

    Very pleasant surprise Skuxie!
