Tried getting into Wake by Hail the Sun and I feel like I should like this more than I actually do.

There’s clear talent here. The drumming is insane throughout, almost distracting with how busy it gets. The vocals bring a chaotic post-hardcore energy that works in short bursts but wears on you over a full listen. It feels like every track is trying to peak at once.

    Some favourites for me:
    • “Falling on Deaf Ears”
    • “Relax/Divide”
    • “Human Target Practice”
    • “Cosmic Narcissism”
    • “Anti Eulogy”

    Least favourites:
    • “Missed Injections”
    • “The People That Protect Us”
    • “Jane Doe”

These feel the most controlled while still hitting the intensity the band is going for, while the weaker cuts start to feel more exhausting than engaging and don’t stand out as much.

Biggest issue is cohesion and dynamics. It rarely slows down or gives anything room to breathe, so it starts to blur together instead of building toward something memorable. It’s more impressive than enjoyable.

Feels like one of those albums where if you already love this style, you’ll be into it. If not, this probably won’t convert you.

Not bad, and there’s enough here that I can see myself revisiting certain tracks.

    Rating: 7/10 @AOTWClub
