One thing I do admire about Drake is that he constantly stays on the forefront of modern popular music. That’s not just down to him, it’s also down to the people producing and mixing the songs.

I’m really loving the “thumping dark bassline, dark synthy vocal sampling” direction that modern rap seems to be taking at the moment. This is where the future of music is going.

“Rock music” will never be the most popular music ever again. We are heading towards something completely new.

It’s a sign of the times. I haven’t heard a sound as strong as Janice STFU since Heil Hitler.

It’s the first example I could think of. The old “rock and roll music will return” assumption that’s ran throughout rock since the 90s. Wasn’t shi--ing on it, just saying I can’t see it ever becoming the most popular genre again, dominating the charts. (Basically electric guitar band music is what I mean)

I’m interested to see how this direction we’re currently heading in turns out over the next 20-30 years. I think where it goes though “Rock” should always be at least infused in some way with what is happening.

Oh yeah I agree completely. Didn't mean to insinuate you were knocking it, Rock has been dead in the mainstream for a hot minute now lol. Rap is equally boring and going in an interesting place recently imo. Feels like there's more experimentation which is cool

Idk man. The only reason I basically only stay in the AOTW thread anymore is because it's really hard to talk about music on here that's not Eminem related without it being relegated to binary things instead of approaching the things you both like and dislike intellectually. But that's a problem with music discussion and this site as a whole.

Yeah I genuinely believe Drake (and producers/mixer) has mastered what a perfect modern rap/pop single should sound like with Janice STFU imo. The synth melody is so simple yet so catchy. It’s not a collection of notes we haven’t heard many times before, b

Coming in straight away with the “Emiliana”, the pitch shifting on the chorus vocals, then the kicks coming in for the verse. Can’t fault it.

A lot of Drakes writing really doesn't do it for me but he definitely knows the formula for pop rap better than basically anyone else and his producers really did do incredible work on the album.

Drake has been saying corny stuff for years now, his Forever verse is filled with it but there's Nostalgia and the lack of the mob boss aesthetic for back then. The corny stuff is still fun when it's on purpose though, he can be really funny!
