Mar 10, 2017 When suddenly this question gets asked... Now I understand why they would ask.. I understand "Yes" and "No" options... But why the f--- is their an option for "Ally"? Does selecting that I am an "ally" of LGBTQ magically give me an advantage of being selected over someone that chooses "No"? I'm leaning toward saying I'm an Ally if its going to help me get accepted... I just find the option incredibly strange >_>
Mar 10, 2017 They ask general questions... next one asks if I've competed a prison sentence lol Typical government questions with stuff like this but why "ally"?
Mar 10, 2017 "LGBTQ is an acronym that stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer, and is used to designate a community of people whose sexual or gender identities can create shared political and social concerns."
Mar 10, 2017 The lady offered it to me because my GPA was high enough I guess so I figured I would take advantage of the opportunity
Mar 10, 2017 Is this a federal scholarship or something? If It's a private organization, they can set whatever standards they want. Maybe they value somebody who isn't bigoted?
Mar 10, 2017 Pretty sure it's private... So your saying choose "Ally"? I didn't think saying "No" I wasn't gay would make me bigoted but I guess saying I support the movement makes me seem anti-bigoted? Why isn't there an option for "No" I'm not gay, but yes I support them?
Mar 10, 2017 What if this is a trick and they are homophobic and by selecting I'm an ally it hurts my chances
Mar 10, 2017 lol having "ally" as an option is like some insane thought experiment--you don't wanna be so self-righteous as to call yourself an ally, but if it's presented as an option, then clicking "no" makes it look like you made a conscious choice to say you're not an ally. f--- that.
Mar 10, 2017 this has to be a worse question than when they ask if you're a visible minority (and you are). holy s--- what a catch 22
Mar 10, 2017 "the gays" are large in number, they would make a powerful ally and I think you should join forces with them.
Mar 10, 2017 semi related - in Australia, we have a similar question on governemnt/registration forms. We have lots of benefits for ATSI people (aboriginal, torres strait islander). All my friends who are part ATSI (even if it's llike 1/0th.) that are eligible, always tick "NO" for it, because they don't want to identify as an ATSI lmao.
