This is hopefully going to be a weekly thread on sxn80 where we revisit influential or otherwise popular albums from years past. First up:

    Outkast - Aquemini [1998]

1a. How old were you when Aquemini was released and did you hear it when it first came out? What was your reaction?
1b. If not, when did you first hear Aquemini? How do you think listening to it at a later date affected your view of it?

    2. Today, how does it hold up sonically? Does it still sound fresh?

    3. What about content-wise? Does its theme or subject matter make it feel dated or is it timeless?

    4. What are the best and worst songs on Aquemini?

    5. What albums, if any, do you see it still influencing today?

    6. Will Aquemini still be part of the hip-hop zeitgeist 10 years from now?

1a. How old were you when Aquemini was released and did you hear it when it first came out? What was your reaction? I was 12, and obviously I heard Rosa Parks. For a sixth grader mostly afraid of black music (and their usually scary/impenetrable imagery), I found it to be catchy but very foreign. Was not sure what to make of it.

    2. Today, how does it hold up sonically? Does it still sound fresh?
Obviously a classic album. Not my favorite Outkast album, granted, but their fusion of funk and southern psychedelic hip-hop have a real timeless quality. We often reflect on how dated songs from the 90s sound -- nsync, etc. Outkast holds up alarmingly well.

    3. What about content-wise? Does its theme or subject matter make it feel dated or is it timeless?
To an extent, the sound/Atlanta themes were distinguishing them from coastal hip hop... most of the songs still resonant to me.

    4. What are the best and worst songs on Aquemini?
Da Art of Storytellin' parts 1 and 2. Nathaniel. the harmonica break on rosa parks
    Liberation

    5. What albums, if any, do you see it still influencing today?
Clearly Kendrick. Probably Open Mike Eagle

    6. Will Aquemini still be part of the hip-hop zeitgeist 10 years from now?
    Yes

1a. How old were you when Aquemini was released and did you hear it when it first came out? What was your reaction?
    I was 4, and no.

1b. If not, when did you first hear Aquemini? How do you think listening to it at a later date affected your view of it?
Well, time to be honest -- only ever heard it front to back for the first the time this past Friday. Ive been playing catch up with a lot of releases like this recently. I think listening to something in retrospect like this can affect someone's view, but being critical is what helps avoid this bias. The last thing you want is to pull a @Sheriff Skippy and underrate an Illmatic just because you missed the context for its release by a few years.

    2. Today, how does it hold up sonically? Does it still sound fresh?
It's incredible. Absoutely timeless. Could come out today and still be relevant, "fresh," impressive, and a game-stopper. In fact, if it came out today, it might make the people who stan someone like Kendrick (more than I do) sit down for a minute.

    3. What about content-wise? Does its theme or subject matter make it feel dated or is it timeless?
It's actually crazy how much the content of artists like Scarface, or 3k and Big Boi, etc are all still being parroted nowadays. Shows how little we've changed as a society. Its basically the idea of tupac's interview on Mortal Man. Its all still relevant. The systemic prejudice, the cyclic violence and drug use bred from oppression, etc.

    4. What are the best and worst songs on Aquemini?
    Not sure

    5. What albums, if any, do you see it still influencing today?
Danny Brown's Old ("the return"), Kendrick's TPAB, etc.

    6. Will Aquemini still be part of the hip-hop zeitgeist 10 years from now?
    For sure.

on second though, i shoulda told you to do ATliens first, im more familiar with that record.

Ftr @Narsh I think you missed my point entirely whenever I shared my thoughts on illmatic. I said for its time it was probably the best thing to ever come out, but now it's above average, basically how I feel MBDTF will be in 30 years. Don't see what's wrong about that :p

I was -2 years old, and no, I didn't hear it when it came out.
1b. If not, when did you first hear Aquemini? How do you think listening to it at a later date affected your view of it?
I heard Aquemini last year when I finally checked out OutKast's entire discography.
    2. Today, how does it hold up sonically? Does it still sound fresh?
It sounds fresh every time I listen to it.
    3. What about content-wise? Does its theme or subject matter make it feel dated or is it timeless?
Feels slightly dated, but that's just my opinion. Mainly because I wasn't alive at the time.
    4. What are the best and worst songs on Aquemini?
Best: Skew It On The Bar-B & Da Art of Storytellin' (1&2)
    Worst: Mamacita & Nathaniel

    5. What albums, if any, do you see it still influencing today?
    Not sure.
    6. Will Aquemini still be part of the hip-hop zeitgeist 10 years from now?
    Definitely, classic album.

huh thats weird tbh, because I feel like the themes found on the early outkast records Ive heard (southern...and atliens included) are both still very heavily reflected by "conscious" rappers today like kendrick. or killer mike. etc.

you think you can relate to TPAB but not Aquemini as much?

nah its honestly just because on the surface you're gonna feel like something 20 years old is dated. Its normal to think that. And its true a lot of the times. But one of the great things about this record, from what I can tell so far, is how seamlessly you can apply andre's rapping to our current society.
