...at least as a philosopher. True he's said a lot of dumb s--- but this line from III Mind 5 might be the most insightful thing I've ever heard in a rap song:

I wonder what exactly he meant by it though. Did he mean "evolve" literally, in the Darwinian sense?

Anyway that line popped in my head today and I never fully realized how brilliant it is. Even though I hate rap I'm almost tempted to give his music a fair hearing for the first time, especially since denouncing Christianity in 2014 I believe. He might just be the smartest rapper in the game. Definitely smarter than Kendrick at least.

A line is always going to be limited in insightfulness & Hopsin doesn’t possess any within his music regardless, he makes surface level critiques on subjects he doesn’t understand. I’m a Hospin fan, but philosophy isn’t a trait he has ever wielded, he’s extremely uneducated on socioeconomics. It’s also silly to weaponise Kendrick’s lyricism in order to prop up Hopsin’s, not only due to the significant difference in consciousness & approach to their music, but because it wasn’t a comparison in the first place.

But I’ll bite:

The noble person that goes to work and pray like they ‘posed to? Slaughter people too, your murder's just a bit slower

Imo, Hopsin is talented and creative. He has the rhyming, production and some catchy hooks. But I would not call him a philosopher. Many of his opinions have been black-and-white, reductionist, holier-than-thou.

He kind of gets bad rap in the hiphop community as the "im14andthisisdeep" rapper because of his immaturity and bad takes.

Seeing the interview where he reconciles with Dame Ritter, it seems like he's matured a bit and improved his mental health in the past few years. I wish the best for him.

Has Kendrick really "evolved" though? I don't get that impression at all. Last time I checked he's still blaming white people for his people's shortcomings. That's not very sophisticated. Also spiritually I would think that's gotta take a toll on a man after a while.
