I've seen people call hip-hop the culture and rap the musical aspect of that culture. I use them interchangeably to describe a genre of music characterized by spoken word synchronized with a beat. I'm a culture vulture tho so idk.

The common description by many people is hip-hop as the culture that includes rap, dj's, graffiti and b-boys.

    But really i don't know

Hip hop is the embodiment of the four elements--graffiti, deejaying, break dancing and emceeing.
Rap is just another way of saying talking lyrically, often in rhymes, over a beat.

The sun is the sun. You can also call it a star but these two terms doesn't exclude each other. It's a science guys.

Some people also think hip-hop is mainstream and rap is underground. lol

One of my friends and I were just talking about this tonight.

We ended on the simple statement that rap is usually a part of hip hop music but not all hip hop music includes rap.

Similarly you can have rap that is not hip hop.

I sort of group these two terms together but hip-hop is what I'd usually use to sum up the whole culture.

Rap is definitely a big part of the culture to say the least, it's what I think we can all agree on that it brings us together.
