nearly perfect. there are flashes of sentimentality and idealism, sure, but i'd argue the show's detractors are more prone to look for (and criticize) those qualities because it's in the political arena. it's skeptical without being cynical, smart without being pedantic. characters are all sympathetic, none superhuman. the balances of power are remarkable--bartlet's not an empty suit, but he's not always the smartest or best-prepared person in the room. the villains aren't caricatures. it's better paced than any hour-long i can think of. really, this might be my best pick for greatest drama ever, no qualifiers.

honorable mention to NYPD Blue, Homicide: Life on the Street, and Twin Peaks. and, you know, stretches of Lost.

Had to right click and "search Google for this image" to find out what show it was (for others who don't know, it's West Wing). I'll have to check it out.

Glad to see you throw Lost in the mix

people who like The West Wing might show you clips like this one--bite-sized, ideological. they're cool, but thankfully, they're few and far between. the show excels in the moments between and in the aftermath of the biggest plot points. it's able to do so because the cast is so remarkably talented. what's more, they work beautifully in nearly any combination, which can't be said for other great shows, even those with fewer principals.

Yeah disagree enitrely and love the show.

I didn't come into with any biases and there were numerous sub par moments throughout the entire series

The wire, it's more concise and just as engaging. Features plenty standout performances as well

Im not gonna be as well read on west wing as you since I've only ever done one watch but it has some of my favorite characters ever, but I just remember it getting noticeably weaker at a certain point.

Ah d--- just saw that you said network. The yeah west wing is deff up there...monk and house were both great imo

The Sorkin seasons are almost flawless but once you get into the John Wells era it's got more inconsistent.

I will say "Two Cathedrals" is up there with the best tv show episodes ever made.

Haven't seen much of it, but I love Sorkin's dialogue and this is where he made his name.
Apparently he used to go to the opera as a kid and loved the rhythm they kept in conversation.
