Sep 23, 2015 Here in Australia we're about to enter the off season in a couple of weeks and there's always some controversial moves. This is another year we have another huge name moving back to his home state and as usual there's people questioning whether the 'go home factor' is genuine etc. Others worry that it allows the good teams to get better and the bad ones worse due to them plucking good young players from up and coming clubs. Also, how much rights do you think players should have in choosing where they go? Another example today a player from my club who has been on the list for 3 years, not played a game due to injury has decided to leave because another club offered more money despite the fact we dealt with all his injuries since being drafted. Also honouring contracts. A lot more recently have pulled the 'go home' card halfway through a contract. I'm sure this would apply to most sports especially in the US since Australian football tries to do everything America does.
Sep 24, 2015 @NBAsxn your thoughts? The Free Agency system in the Australia isn't as advanced as the US Sports. Only got introduced a few years back.
Sep 24, 2015 I think every player should have the right to sign where he wants as long as his current contract situation allows it and the team wants him (obviously) Perfect example would be a guy like LeBron. He had the freedom to sign wherever he wanted and people hated him for choosing the situation that worked out best for him. I will never understand why, but FA gets people so heated. I was sad when LeBron left but I don't have this hate for LeBron like all of Cleveland and the world did when he left the first time.
Sep 24, 2015 People didn't hate LeBron for leaving. They didn't really even hate "The Decision." It was the prep rally where him and wade talked about winning not 5, not 6, not 7, championships. Anyways back to OP, I think FA is great and allows players to maximize their worth aND choose the situation best for them. Also allows teams to become competitive or find the missing piece to make a run for a championship.
Sep 24, 2015 I disagree. People were instantly furious when he made the decision to leave. Regardless, it's stupid to hate a man for taking part in a Heat Pep rally to get the fans excited. I agree with everything you said about FA tho. Think it's great.
Sep 24, 2015 Fans are always instantly upset when their super star leaves. Jerseys will always be burned because they feel betrayed and fans always feel the players owe them something. Then the rally happened while the wound was still fresh for Cavs fans.
Sep 24, 2015 See I'm not a jersey burner by any stretch. I understand and would do the same money-wise etc if the opportunity came up. My example I gave for my Australian football team kind of annoyed me tho. A player who hadn't played a game yet due to injuries decided to leave for more money after all we'd put into him angered me. Thats where I think a little bit of loyalty should reside. Other than that I'm generally fine with the idea. It's your career. Not the teams. You gotta look out for yourself. People who call players sell outs etc. The one thing I always say to them is 'I hope you never accept a promotion in your life because you'll be the biggest hypocrite in the world.
