    Most Disappointing Sophomore Album?
When it comes to being a star, you got to know how to keep delivering. Some people just know what it takes, others fail to live up to the hype. What is the most disappointing album that followed up an impressive debut?

    There are a couple of things you have to consider;
    • The quality of the sophomore album
    • The hype that was built around that album
    • How far they've fallen off from their first album.
You don't have to pick an artist that has completely fallen off. Some artists can manage to work their way back in preceding projects, their sophomore album still counts.

This one I'm going to backtrack all the way back to the 90s where Snoop Dogg was an iconic figure in the west. After his debut classic in Doggystyle, he has never lived up to that standard since and a few years later he released Tha Doggfather. While it was somewhat a reasonable album and not his worst, he didn't quite get to the level of Doggystyle. It's disappointing in the sense that he never really found the best form of himself on his own projects again.

The next sophomore album came out not long after he released a track with Kendrick Lamar that didn't feature in the album but left the hip-hop community going crazy with this amazing verse by Kendrick.. (Control if you haven't figured out by now). I'm talking about Big Sean's Hall of Fame. While Big Sean's arguable yet to release a good album, I was still very disappointed with this album considering the support he has around him with the likes of Kanye West and his production team (Mike Dean, No ID, Travis Scott), the album was quite horrible and really has no excuse.

This was actually harder than I thought.. :whew: A lot of people say Massacre, I somewhat agree but wasn't quite sure. What do you guys think?

@coca wtf is this you? lol...

I would say 50 cent the Massacre, its a great album, but no where near the classic that GRODT is

Before I start, I just want to say that none of these albums are bad, they were just initially quite underwhelming for me when I first listened to them compared to their debuts. Also, in my collection of music I think that most of my sophomore albums are really good, so the ones I've picked here are probably a bit of a stretch anyway.

Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon 2
Man On The Moon 1 was such an amazing album and although I liked a few of the songs on MOTM2 I just never got the same connection from it that MOTM1 gave me. Since then, many would argue that Cudi's musical efforts have been on the decline.

    J. Cole - Born Sinner
Despite Cole World not being a perfect album I still enjoyed it very much and found it to be a great commercial debut for Cole. I found Born Sinner to be a disappointment compared to Cole World - it just always felt that there was something missing. However, over time I have grown to like it but I still don't think it lived up to its potential or the hype. Nevertheless, Cole came back strong with 2014 Forest Hills Drive so he's definitely been able to overcome that.

    Joey Bada$$ - Summer Knights
Joey's debut mixtape, 1999, is incredible to me and is still my favourite Hip Hop mixtape of all time. I've just never felt that Summer Knights has lived up to it. Summer Knights is still a great project, but if you're going to compare it to 1999 I just don't really think it comes close. However, Joey returned with an amazing debut studio album with B4.Da.$$. Also, Summer Knights didn't really affect his career or reputation too much anyway.

Beauty Behind the Madness is technically a sophomore album. It's not necessarily bad. It's just....simple. Like a basic pop album. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy a fair amount of the tracks. But it really could've and should've been a lot better. Many people hate on Kissland, but I see Kissland as Abel trying to make that dark/depressing sound marketable/mainstream. It didn't work out well, but with a bit more work it definitely could've became more popular. Abel just took the easy way out on BBTM, dumbed down his sound and went more pop. That's what's most disappointed about BBTM to me. It's a sign that the old Abel is gone and more than likely won't come back. His music is just going to become more and more generic.

The Incredible True Story by Logic is also a pretty disappointing sophomore album. Not that it's bad or anything. It's just too much of the same. Logic is just continuing to play it safe and not really taking more risks with his music. Many people say he bites, and I won't argue it because I agree to a certain extent. He bites, but at least he's still capable of rapping his a--- off. But on the other hand, it's still just him playing it safe.

RT, except I didn't like his debut at all either.

Cole World was some incredible production with no substance. The album was muddied by archaic label ideas on how to sell the project (right down to the name TBH, that was changed cause of Hov). The tracklist saw dated songs, and others added (again) just to sell the album.

Born Sinner was one of the most forced piece of music I've ever heard. I guess Cole had the freedom to create after the success of the first album, but he airballed it by being so focused on whatever end product he wanted, that every step towards that end product was a misstep.

FHD was a step in the right direction, I enjoyed that album quite a bit despite some of its obvious shortcomings.

    ^ This!

Ma$e's Double Up is pretty disappointing, it's by no means a s-----y album but it's such a colossal let down after he dropped Harlem World. "Don't leave while you hot that's how Ma$e screwed up".
Lloyd Bank's Rotten Apple sucks now that I recall, I only remember the joint with Prodigy & Fifty but it was a let-down compared to HFM.

The New Danger by Mos Def wasn't as good as BOBS so yeah it qualifies as a disappointment.
