KENDRICK LAMAR: To p---- A Butterfly (Polydor)

A hip-hop album that’s really jazzy. Alright has become a bit of an anthem for African-Americans. I love the diversity and what he has to say and I’m in awe of his rhythmic inventiveness. It’s like high art but also straight from the ghetto.

    D’ANGELO: Voodoo (EMI)

A perfect neo-soul album. I love his voice and layers of harmony as well as the grooves. It just has a cohesive feeling that’s swampy and sensual. It’s a crossover between the sexual and the spiritual.

    NIRVANA: Nevermind (Geffen/Universal)

Kurt Cobain wrote great pop songs disguised as rock anthems and this inspired me to pick up a guitar when I was 13. It changed music for ever and changed my life. I had a lot of texture to my voice and thought people only wanted to hear voices like Whitney Houston’s – until I saw him.

SLY & THE FAMILY STONE: Fresh (Epic)

This is a proper experimental funk record and I love the version of Que Sera, Sera which turns the Doris Day song inside out. A friend played me another version of the album where Sly secretly remixed the master and it is more stripped back. The record company printed quite a few copies before they realised and I’d love to fi nd one on vinyl.

    CAROLE KING: Tapestry (Ode/Epic/Legacy)

A Sunday afternoon record. King is one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century. Every track is sublime. She was writing for other artists but she went for it herself on this. There are so many poignant songs on it.

I have the exact same "best albums list". My favorite albums list would be a little bit different though
