Mar 10, 2017 In light of this nicki vs Remy beef it had me wondering. If Eminem beefed with a rapper today like drake earl j Cole vince staples mensa anyone from this gen of rap. Would Eminem style of dissing work today. It seems disses now are predicated on being actual songs, ex back to back. I wonder if Eminem could make a hit diss record that would be played on radio. I love the warning an nail in the coffin but it's sound comes from really a gone era. Just want some opposite opinions I guess.
Mar 10, 2017 For disses to work, they have to be on-point, scathing, have a lot of lyrical wordplay and wit and in certain cases, has to prevent a rapper from making a credible response without making himself look like a fool. There's a reason why the Jay-Z/Nas beef was so legendary, it's because it was like a chess game where nobody could truly win.
Mar 10, 2017 Eminem would shine on diss tracks nowadays provided he has enough information on the person he's going against to bring anything of substance. I remember when Eminem threw a very soft jab, borderline lovetap, at Asher Roth in MMLP2 and that ended up getting attention from the likes of Hot 97. Em calling Trump a b---- made news outlets everywhere. A full fledged diss track would shut down the internet for days.
Mar 10, 2017 I agree that Eminem would set the Internet in a panic mode for a few days. But it just seems like now people want a quality song with the diss. Can Eminem do that? I don't know if his style allows for him to do that.
Mar 10, 2017 Are Nail in the Coffin or The Sauce not catchy enough to be played on the radio? I think they are.
Mar 10, 2017 Well actually if they had been pushed, Many of the EMinem disses could have been successful singles in my opinion.
Mar 10, 2017 Yes. Because it's very human / conversational. So that s--- doesn't date all that much. He disses almost like he would speak, and say insults. Like an angry man insulting somebody. Much different to most who still try to look cool and use slang and more persona and it ends up being cheesy. I mean just look at the lyrics of Ether for example, corny as f--- (''gay-z & c----a-fella'') - because Nas is so concerned about being the macho male toughguy rapper that he ends up dissing like a 10 year old on a playground. Em's dissing is vicious, and he has the advantage of self-deprecation (''slap my mom, slap the f--- out of her!", "...about how I nutted early, cause I ejaculated prematurely") and a very real-life humour which gives him an edge.
Mar 10, 2017 his actual, technical style would work, definitely. but i don't think his point of view would resonate quite as much. kids/teens in 1999 were angry and rebellious. now they care about fashion and have tumblrs.
Mar 10, 2017 Ehh idk bout this one, I mean fashion culture and social media are definite trends 90s babies grew up with that starkly contrast actual 90s kids' experiences but I think angst and rebellion is kinda universal among all generations of teenagers. Eminem's subject matter would still connect because kids are still doing drugs as much as ever and guys like --- and bones show that being an angry depressed loser is still trendy w young rap fans.
Mar 11, 2017 Eminem would shock the world. Nothing has changed with diss tracks. Doesnt need to be radio friendly.. just gotta get the job done. and Eminem gets it done. Itd be refreshing actually
Mar 11, 2017 You guys all make good points. My only concern however is I'm seeing people today more an more brush off bars if the song it's on isn't good. Take for example ether. People now like to say oh Jay won cause takeover is the" better song" I'm with yall on how Eminem technical wise can beat almost anybody in rap music. I just don't see a song like nail in the coffin in a club. But I could be wrong
