Mar 16, 2015 Don't have much to offer here yet, but we can all agree that there's a lot going on this album -So far I can point out the fragmented poem throughout, which is finally completed during the pac exchange at the end -A crucial moment for Kendrick where he broke down in a hotel room? Mentioned a few times throughout, and there's a housekeeping skit in the middle of "u" -the obvious catipiller/butterfly references, and then the actual poem the title is from is explained in that pac outro. -So there are two seperate poems used as the basis for this album? -references to "Lucy" -what's the yamsssssssss?? oh and "alright" is one of kendricks best songs to date... discuss
Mar 16, 2015 f--- YOU LUCY Will return later, haven't listened to nothing but i yet (I wanted to see how different it was)
Mar 16, 2015 The songs following the poem monologue are representative of that lines antithesis, how he really feels vs how he acts
Mar 16, 2015 Im pretty sure the whole album is supposed to be a 'coming of age' album i see it as a story of kendrick or some other character (maybe kunta) leaving home to live life his own way and experiment with all the temptations life offers, only to realise that it's all just fake and insignificant in the grand scheme of things, he ends up hating the person he's become in this ruleless environment (u) and realises he's not invincible and is just a mortal man, but is still in control of his own life and opportunities, hence realising he is a butterfly, and no longer needs the 'caterpillars' ways of thinking, any caterpillar can become a butterfly, but not all make it out of that place of following money and status, the story of a boy becoming his own man and not following society's standards and teachings Not sure if that makes sense but that's what i get from it, also 'alright' is dope as h---.... EDIT: but the album has not nearly been out long enough for me to say for sure
Mar 16, 2015 Yams are like, temptation. Or the excesses of fame, right? Not listening to the album atm, but that was my initial take @Narsh
Mar 16, 2015 The album is kendrick's weird, restless, insecure, alien younger self fighting either break find it's place alongside modern-day Kendrick, or take over Predator-style right @BigCountry ? slug did it first also, kendrick has definitely tried hallucinogens finally lol. at least we have something to thank Ab Soul for. "i" its the live performance translated to wax...its pretty f---in awesome right Hahah yeah that's what I thought as well. "Yams are the power that be" = temptations sent by god to test every one from a mortal man to mofuckin bill clinton
Mar 16, 2015 The whole album syncs up perfectly with the movie "The Hard Way" starring Michael J. Fox and James Woods.
Mar 16, 2015 Not getting mentions but I think you and @Pixel are on the right track. It's about a lot more than just kendrick, though.
Mar 16, 2015 yeah I feel like it's also a struggle with where he's placed in the current context of racial tensions in the US and he somehow manages to talk to his community in somewhat of a vacuum -- although he mentions all the recent tragedies, he doesn't push the blame off of himself, or his peers. He simply asks everyone else to stop f---ing dropping the ball when it's in their court. to own up to some of the responsibility, be negus instead of n----s, as it were
Mar 16, 2015 It's a gripping take on what Kendrick sees as not just issues but questions as well that nest deeply in the urban culture. He's trying to find peace but wrestles with his own perspectives as well as the norms of society. The fact that he's doing this meanwhile experimenting with new flows and story-telling twists is mind-blowing. It's fitting something like this drops at a time where instability & unawareness seems to be growing inside the collective state of America, it's a celebration of Kendrick's culture and I feel we can all apply it into our own lives...some quick thoughts for now as I still wrap my head around this.
Mar 16, 2015 I'm sure there will be lots of reaching forthcoming from people over-analyzing this album, but at the moment everything people said in this topic is very blatant if you've listened to the album a few times.
Mar 16, 2015 Here's a reach for ya. http://www.asktheexterminator.com/Do_It_Yourself_Pest_Control/Edible_Insects.shtml The Yams refers to this section in particular: Spoiler In the country of Thailand, many insects are eaten as deep-fried delicacies. Some of these bugs include crickets and cicadas. Giant water bugs are usually cooked into chili and served with rice. Termite eggs are also a delicacy and are often cooked in soup. The Thai people often cook red ant larvae into flavorful salads called yams. In some primitive cultures in Thailand, spiders are eaten live. I have an image in my head of the itsy-bitsy spider coming up the spout again.
Mar 16, 2015 First Yeezy can f--- off this is a thread dedicated to analyzing & perhaps reaching. Second as long as reaching doesn't get ^ that out of hand, we''re all good in here
Mar 17, 2015 I went through this album last night with rapgenius on and read every songs' lyrics & the storytelling on this s--- is on a whole other level yo. I was only able to pick up the first layer of the songs but you could just tell there's layers upon layers in these lyrics
