After months of searching for jobs I caved and put an application in at Statistics Canada for a phone interviewer position. I got a call back and scheduled an interview for Monday. 20 hr/week at $16.31 an hour, which is great considering minimum wage here is $10.10.

The only thing is I'll have to drive an hour (give or take, due to city traffic) for every shift, aaaaaaaaand call centers are notoriously portrayed as horrendous, hair pulling places of employment.

plz need advice i dont have any parents to give me some

Sounds awful to me. I don't know enough about your background, but surely there's a less demoralizing option out there.

Then again, as you mention, the pay appears good and PT will afford you opportunities to pursue other work. At this stage of your life, you sometimes have to take s--- jobs. With an education, and network, you should strive for a salary position somewhere, or something that fulfills you creatively/emotionally..

Never done it but just be prepared to have many people you call hate you, get upset and/or hang up. I'd imagine it's best not to take it personal and to just kinda accept it as part of the job.

It'll probably get pretty frustrating fairly quickly, maybe you can eventually move to a different position or something. I personally couldn't do something like that long term but maybe you'll do good with it.

I've never heard of anybody having a positive experience at a call center. Them and selling Vector/Cutco knives door-to-door seem to be at the bottom of the barrel. I'd rather work for minimum wage goofing around at a fast food place.

my friends something similar, and you two are alike in a lot of ways (at least from i can tell) -- smart, lowkey, stoner, very into music and s--- but is also focused when it needs be (im only 2 out of these 5 things lol). he didnt complain much but i also think he only did it part time.

its probably overhyped in terms of how "demoralizing" it can be. I found working in a Genetics Lab demoralizing lol -- it all depends on your personal work ethic and state of mind. Anything repetitive is going to be, well, repetitive.

The pay looks great, and its not going to be mentally taxing enough to where you cant pursue your unrelated side-projects.

if theres nothing else on the horizon id 100% say take it.

Compared to the places I mentioned? I worked for my uncle in his bar and grill start up in the summer during high school. Had some pretty great times. Not to mention Jimmy John's employs every college stoner in town. Not every place is McDonalds.

my only complaint is my edit, i feel like im way too lazy not to have an office job or something :'(

I also couldnt spend all day serving other people food and not eating myself. so many #fatpeopleproblems when it comes to this occupation :laff:

I think call centers are overrated re: how awful they are. obviously no1s going to have a swell time so all the feedback is always negative, but that doesnt mean it isnt worth the pay or is that draining. i basically call/sell to people on the phone all day (ive started to do more support work now so Im also getting customer service experience) and rejection/monotony of doing the some process again and again is the worst of it.

also, if Im going to have a job im not invested in anyway, id rather it be one that taxes my brain the least. idk, im lazy like that. id rather take a call center job and let my mind wonder all day then have to be on my toes (no pun just idiom intended) at a restaurant or something

so yeah i guess a lazy indian stoner isnt the best person to give u advice @LasiK :laff: but i say go for it

Nobody take @Narsh 's advice. An Indian working at a call center has already sold his soul. @LasiK might as well get a job as a shoe shiner.

I worked in a call center selling UGG boots (the Oprah sequined ones to be exact) for a few months one winter, it was a lot better than other call center experiences I've heard of. They gave everyone $600 sales bonuses for Christmas (there were about 40 of us), and let us work up to 20 hours overtime. I worked like 55 hours a week, the paycheck was nice. Good luck @LasiK!

yeah, i worked at one a looooong time ago. around the time i was in high school. the one i worked at didn't pay nearly that much. it was mostly based on comission. i didn't do too well at the call center, but i wasn't alone because most ppl weren't too good with it either.....but there were some ppl who actually made a decent amount of cash because they were able to convince ppl to buy what we we're selling

I'd take it for now but look for something else immediately. The pay combined with the hours isnt very good at all.

    Wish u luck
