ok im super late to this topic but ive been away w no internet for a week and couldnt find any thread discussing it so bear w me

so basically some scientists or whatever found out hip hop is now the most dominant genre in the us

The genre has been growing and growing for 30 years, with a lot of funeral prophecies along the way. One of the biggest reasons why it's been evolving all the time, is it's disdain for its past, and the rebel spirit that rock didnt manage to keep alive. Whereas a majority of big rock bands romanticise its past, and have no problems paying dues, mainstream hip hop tends to throw the earlier generations the middle finger and do what they want. This can be traced from p---- C giving the east coast hip hop name and roots the middle finger, all the way to Young Thug who defied any sort of unwritten rap rules that was still in effect earlier this decade.

So now that hip hop is the current most established genre, will it be too established for new rebellious, revolutionary acts to associate with the genre? An example that might be a sign of this is Lil Uzi, who doesn't want to be associated as a rapper at all, even if he's a part of the rap industry, and mainly works with rappers and hip hop (trap) producers.

Also the trap sound has been in the forefront for over a decade now, and I don't feel there's been as much innovation within the soundscape lately. I still feel like 808 drums is the helvetica of drums, but im curious as to what the next sound will be

Yeah I think Hip Hop is at its peak.

Melody in hip hop is critical now more than ever. You don't have it & it is unlikely you will be too succesful. Even Kendrick has showed more of it on d---.

Hip hop will never peak. We say 90's - 00's was the peak. The new generation will claim this is the peak. Hip hop is forever changing and growing. We might go through a dry spell but hip hop will always bounce back.

the difference now is its actually the most consumed genre in the us. only thing making it more popular was if it was the most consumed genre in the entire world, after that then what?

There is still records to be broken from other genres. For example drake is tied with the Beatles with the most songs on billboard 100 at once. Once hip hop has broken records like that then we might get to sit back and say it peaked.... it's deff the top genre right now. But to say it can't take it any farther is a bit ridiculous. They were probably saying the same s--- in the late 80's early 90's.

you mean records like future broke earlier this year when he was the first to release 2 back to back #1 albums week to week?

trap has been following a very similar evolution curve to metal and if it stays in that same curve its about to fall off soon popularity wise

Yeah, I feel like trap is about to be on its way out. Interesting you compare it to metal, wanna expand? I don't know much about metal's evolution.
