I pointed this out in the other thread, I was curious about this

    - When there is a new Jay song/verse, there is almost zero discussion
    - When he drops a new album, there is also not that much discussion
    - Every Jay fan agrees he has his flaws and has no problem admitting it, @ImmortalTechnique pointed this out (so there's no 'stanning')

However, when people on here are asked, almost everybody has Jay in their top 10 and most even in their top 5 or 3. What is the reason that he is treated 'differently' than other popular/considered goat rappers like Kanye, Eminem, Drake, Kendrick etc. Their albums get compared and discussed a million times, and when they have a verse on a song there are several threads discussing it

I was wondering, what is the difference?

Disagree. There's still a commotion when jay drops something. Mchg sounded average with no "big single" but it still dominated radio for a minute and all the blogs were talking about it. I think jay just chooses to stay on the low on the rap side of things for the most part.

That's not that funny. A lot of people consider jay a legend and better than at least half of the dudes on your top 10. :idk:

Well his last album was pretty average, but I noticed a lot of discussion about him when WTT came out...

Jay & Eminem are kinda similar in ways. Both don't need to be active to stay relevant.
Once they drop something everybody pays attention & they will outsell nearly everybody. Both legends who have declined but to stay so relevant for son long is a huge achievement.

Hov just never does anything controversial nowadays. Only time u hear his name is when he buys a new company or some s---, his music is second to his brand. Also, I remember when he took shots at drizzy on the we made it remix with him and electronica, people were talking about that Mrs. Drizzy line for days. And if hov isnt in ur top 10 u need to re evaluate ur life.

I think a lot of it is pure status. He put out a classic album 20 years ago, has continued to put out music that has been commercially successful and (on the main) critically acclaimed.
He hasn't had a great deal of drama for a very long time, he's put out a lot of music and most of it has been good to great, he hasn't stumbled too badly in terms of acts he has endorsed or signed, he's been successful from a business perspective, seems to have a pretty solid personal life (despite all the divorce rumors that were swirling last summer) and is generally seen as a mature, adult presence in hip hop.
He isn't super adventurous musically, sticks to what works and does it well. He hasn't gone out on too many limbs that he could have broken and fallen.
He's a steady, sturdy presence in hip hop for about two decades now, he doesn't need or want controversy.

jay-z is a pioneer to the game and everyone pretty much acknowledges that.
anyways someone said something about mchg being average and that maybe so, but "heaven" is one of my favorite songs by him of all time, that s--- is superb

Hov built a dedicated following that's followed him for several years, he's had different phases of his career but relatively stuck to his own lane as far as music goes. Here in NY the older heads are probably what contribute to his sales, obviously gets plenty of love up here. Lately he's been trying to branch out to a "younger" audience with his music (to mixed success) and business moves, he'll stay relevant until he decides to hang up the mic again.

Jay is still in my top 10 but his last album s----d real bad, i'd even say 50's Animal Ambition was better than it.
