We've had both albums for at least two years now and so its safe to say that good kid, m.A.A.d city is the better album, no doubt. But would anyone else rather listen to Section.80 or is it just me?

    :jordan:

Inspired by @Narsh and @JFK's posts in the other thread.

The run time for both albums is about the same, but Kendrick packs less in good kid, m.A.A.d city than he does in Section.80, so it almost feels like we're getting more in S80. With GKMC, I don't like Real or Compton compared to the rest of the album either, so that adds to it too for me. With Section.80, it's lows are still tracks I enjoy listening to (No Make-Up). And its highs are top 5 Kendrick Lamar (HiiiPower especially). :wow:

Another thing for me is that Section.80 is a non-linear experience, and I appreciate that some times too. Listening good kid, m.A.A.d city sometimes feels like I’m watching the same movie over and over since I listen to albums front to back most times. For lack of better words, it’s almost like Section.80 is an easier listen when you’re listening casually and its filled with great Kendrick Lamar quotes

Again, I'm not saying S80 > GKMC, that's just wrong. My ratings for both Kendrick Lamar albums go as follow:
    Section.80: 9/10
    good kid, m.A.A.d city: 9.5/10

So while we wait for Kendrick Lamar’s new album, let's compare the first two albums. Thoughts? :khaled:

Your ratings of the albums are pretty spot on, except that I might rate the both a bit lower and closer together.

Sec 80 is as immersive as gkmc in its own, less dense, way. And the production is so d--- good. It makes even the objectively lesser tracks like no make up amongst my favorites.

Nah I'm not asking which one is the better album, just asking which you'd rather listen to.

It's the same way I prefer CD to LR when LR is clearly the better album.

and i accidentally deleted the old thread lol, haswoat

    Ah, okay. Makes sense.
I definitely think you nailed it when you said S80 almost seems like an easier listen. I almost feel like it's expected to listen to GKMC front-to-back so I'd have to give it to S80 for the more casual listening sessions.

I think Section 80 isn't as self-aware of its immaturity. Whereas Kendrick does things like Backseat Freestyle on GKMC and embraces and almost parodies being young and reckless with lines, Sec80 has moments like the chorus on Hol' Up that just fall just a little flat for me. Obviously there's not much of a difference in quality, but I think GKMC refines everything he started with Sec80 in a more cinematic manner. The highs are just higher. The top three community voted Kendrick songs are all from GKMC as well:

I listened to both these projects today and thought exactly the same. GKMC is a better album, but section 80 is really close. Also I always have the feeling when I listen to GKMC that I have to listen it from the first song to the last and section 80 as a project I can listen to in 2 or 3 times.

While we're on the subject where do you rank the rest of this major mixtapes?

    GKMC > S80 > OD > KLEP for me

Which means he gets better with every project in my opinion.

I f---ing love KLEP. For me it's pretty much on par with S80. My ranking probably would have to go...

I like good kid maad city's best tracks better than section 80s but I prefer to listen to section 80 more bc of the ability to pretty much pick any track and listen to it in any sequence; whereas with good kid I feel like I have to listen start to finish

Even though i prefer gkmc, i really gotta agree with the whole linear thing, it's nice to listen to S80 sometimes and experience something more dynamic

When two albums are close in quality, nitpicking is the only way to tell which is better lol. It's another word for "talking in great detail".

    The chorus irks me everytime:
