Fincher is not an auteur; he's a quarterback. He might not have designed the plays, but he calls and executes them d--- well. His lack of voice makes his films all the more immersive. While Hollywood often confuses sterile for soulless, Fincher puts the story first and caters to it without ego. The thriller is his baby, from the cult hit to the blockbuster. Of all the people suited for a Hitchcock remake, he's sure to do it the most justice. With that said, what have you seen and how would you rank them?

He's a difficult director to rank. My top 3-4 are all pretty close.

The top three could all be #1 depending on the day. As far as Fight Club goes, I've never been too big of a fan. It tries to be deep when the majority of it is surface level social commentary fueled by misplaced angst, all for an anti-establishment message that I can neither look at as genuine nor resonate with.

Could change on another viewing as my taste has changed significantly since the first one, but that's where I'm at now.

Too sentimental and it plays like a spiritual successor to Forrest Gump.

I might be giving it too much credit at the #8 spot now that I think about it...

The original Swedish version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is better than Fincher's if you ask me. You guys should check it out. A lot better casting imo (Altough Craig is great)

    Haven't seen Alien 3

    1. The Social Network
    2. Zodiac
    3. Seven
    4. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
    5. Gone Girl
    6. Fight Club

    8. Panic Room
    9. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Not sure I understand the auteur/quarterback distinction though, but Fincher is definitely an auteur.

Rewatched The Game recently and it holds up much better than most people give it credit for.

It's massively overrated in some circles (it definitely doesn't touch Fincher's top 3) but I'd say it's in league with Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl, even if it is a bit messier. My only real complaint with the film (besides some quibbles with the social commentary) is that it feels a bit too long, and loses some steam in the mid-section before the "twist". Recent rewatches have left a very positive impression with me tho, so I'd recommend giving it another go.

think my list is exactly the same as @Joshua Smoses ...except I haven't seen Alien 3. Might flip Panic Room and The Game, haven't seen either one in a really long time

I've watched Seven more than any others (and more than most films, period)...but he's a better, more mature filmmaker with Zodiac and The Social Network, without question. Sort of the Pulp Fiction vs. Inglourious Basterds dynamic.

I should've gave my point with more care. He's an auteur in a sense, visually and I think the scripts he chooses have some comminalotites, but I don't think he uses them to convey anything personal. He doesn't appear to invest his personality or philosophy. His cold, clinical, distant style of filmmaking is really what defines him. The quarterback comparison was more in reference to him using his team well, with a handful of DPs and various screenwriters he still manages to do his thing.

you just word it funny. like how can he be a least favorite director if he's in your top 10 of all time, implying there are only a handful of filmmakers worthy of note?
