Personally I feel it was with Recovery. You could say with Encore he got lazy and just went to the bank, putting the album out only because the label needed him to. But if you had told me in 2000 that Eminem would some day make songs like LTWYL and NA, I would have laughed in your face.

@Immy @Narsh @Koolo @Nori gonna need you to bring some logic to this conversation less we get flooded by a tidal wave of Stan's.

And to any em fans who get offended- selling out doesn't necessarily mean falling off.
Definition from Wikipedia: Selling out is a common idiomatic pejorative expression for the compromising of a person's integrity, morality, authenticity, or principles in exchange for personal gain, such as money.
So like making records just to get a hit. Discuss.

Maybe but if that's the case you could argue that TRSS was a sell out single. The label forced him to record it last minute because MMLP didn't have a poppy single like My Name Is. Or you can go farther back and say when he signed with Dre/Aftermath. I would still say Recovery though. Felt to me like he had lost the guts to make the music he wanted.

    Definitely Recovery

Earlier first singles like Real Slim Shady, Without Me, Just Lose It......these were definitely designed for commercial consumption, but they didn't represent Eminem compromising himself artistically. They were still pretty typical Eminem songs at their core. (Just Lose It is godawful, but that's because he was a terrible writer in 2004, not because he was selling out.)

Recovery marked the point where he started working with pop stars that he thought could get him the radio play he got in his prime. It worked fairly well in terms of getting him attention, but it's hard to deny that it was a hypocritical move on its face. Relapse is a worse album than Recovery, but it at least represents Eminem doing what he wanted to do with his music; Recovery is a total capitulation to what he thought the masses wanted to hear. The Eminem of 2001 would've openly mocked the Facebook-quote-ready, put-ya-lightas-up manufactured inspiration of Not Afraid and the sleek radio-ready collaborations with Pink and Rihanna, but in 2010 he used them to his financial advantage and he's been doing it ever since.

after relapse tanked I feel like he kinda went towards a direction that the label may have recommended just to be safe. highly doubt it was just "the songs started to sound different so I scrapped Relapse 2 and made Recovery".

Whatever time period he had two product placement ads during the superbowl. One of them was for lipton ice tea...jesus em.

When you are a hermit, i guess that is how you get a pay cheque inbetween 3 year album cycles.
