Restarting my True Detective thread from SL...here is everything known so far about Season 2:

    Story Details
Season 2 will take place in California. The investigators will be trying to solve the death of Ben Caspar, a 52-year-old man who was killed and dumped on a highway with occult symbols scratched on his chest.

The second season will follow the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt city manager of a fictional California city who’s found brutally murdered amid a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change freeway gridlock in the state. Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it. They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought. Caspar’s 52-year-old corpse is found on a lonely stretch of Pacific Coast Highway near Big Sur—satanic symbols etched on his chest. It turns out he had a penchant for rough sex and may have been involved in the occult.

    Cast:
    Rachel McAdams as Ani Bezzerides
, a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves.

Taylor Kitsch as Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the California Highway Patrol, running from a difficult past and the sudden glare of a scandal that never happened.

Kelly Reilly as Jordan, Frank Semyon’s wife, a former D-list actress who is a full partner in his enterprises and ambitions.

Colin Farrell as Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.

Vince Vaughn as Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.

No date yet for the premiere but it will air "Summer, 2015".

tbh was really disappointed when i found out they were making this an anthology type series and Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson wouldn't be returning. not even the main director from last season is returning. while i thought the writing and story were really good, i can't say im excited at all for this. the only reason i'll give the first episode a watch is cause of how good last season was. i thought this was going to be HBO's new staple, but who knows now. excited for Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams, but they're not McConaughey and Harrelson.

Keeping it going with MM and Woody would have been too good to be true...literally lol Nobody should have expected them to do more than one season, McConaughey especially.
I think with the same team returning the show will keep its quality and Farrell and Vaughn know what they have to live up to so I agree I think they'll pull off surprisingly great performances.

Aside from MM and Woody, the directing was the greatest thing about True Detective.
Really wish Fukunaga had stayed on

Honestly, I'm pretty excited to see how this new trend of anthology series pans out. TD and Fargo were both fantastic (though I tried watching the first episode of American Horror story and I couldn't even make it through the whole thing it was so bad...heard it gets better but I'm pretty wary). With TD especially, there's so much potential to use a similar tone and style in a variety of different settings and time periods. I think it'd be cool if they set a season during, say, prohibition.

Plus, it'll probably be easier to get big-name actors if they only have to sign on for one season.

They aren't going single director anymore. That's honestly the biggest disappointment.

As much as I would like him to be doing all of the second season, I can't say I'm all that upset about Fukunaga not returning. How many TV shows have actually suffered from running multiple directors? Rian Johnson in Breaking Bad, Neil Marshall in Game of Thrones, and Steve Buscemi in The Sopranos are about the only people I can say have made any real impact on the overall show every time they touched an episode. Of course the direction in the first season of True Detective was incredible, but shows have entire production teams that work to maintain a consistent vibe throughout a season. Apart from the different setting and characters, I doubt the show will feel all that different.

Definitely looking forward to the second season. I need to re-watch season one, and get my mind refreshed to it.

Sure, but none of those shows are nearly as defined by their atmosphere or consistency in detail. Fukunaga had motifs and symmetries everywhere. Television shows have always let the writers shine, but season 1 of TD told the story with its visuals early and often. Sure, the show can still be great but I don't think it's accurate to suggest that it won't lose a quality that worked so well for it in season 1. It was like an 8 hour movie. A complete thought.

Compare that to Rian Johnson's fly episode of Breaking Bad which is what many consider a hiccup (though I myself enjoy it). There were no bottle episodes to save budget. There were no moments with crashing airplanes or heads on turtles. It was a single writer who had worked on these characters in his own books and cared about them. So at least they're keeping that aspect intact.

You're not wrong, and all of that is why I said I would have liked for him to stay on, I just think that the change to multiple directors isn't going to be as dramatic a issue as people are expecting. Especially with the reports that the second season isn't going to be as dark as the first. Season 1 needed that atmosphere and strong sense of dread to keep the material feeling consistently heavy in the more quiet moments. If the show is less moodier in the second season, I don't think it will really need that conciseness having one director brings, because at the end of the day it is the writing that's going to make or break this show.

I just saw the set pics of Collin Ferrell. That f---ing pony tail and mustache may have killed the season for me. Ugh.
