Both are top notch thrillers by esteemed directors with all star casts.
Both keep you guessing until the final scene.

I could watch The Departed every day and never get sick of it.
They have the same IMDB scores and came out in the same month so I thought it'd be a fun matchup.
The Prestige is still pretty great.

Always thought The Departed was overrated, so The Prestige.

i am a huge, huge, huge fan of the prestige. i think it's one of the best scripts ever filmed. bale is great, jackman is very good. it's the best scarjo performance. the degree of difficulty in not only making a double-framing-device structure work, but reveal major plot points, is genius.

i'm still going to vote for the departed, because it's got much stronger performances top-to-bottom, is both grittier AND funnier, is tighter (prestige meanders in the second half of the second act). it's almost perfect except for that stupid f---ing final shot.

it's closer than people in here seem to think, but departed wins.

The rat in the foreground of the capitol? Think it's a bit heavy handed? Didn't really bother me. It's just a garnish of magic realism on an otherwise well grounded film.

The Departed, easily. It's near flawless up until the last 30 or so seconds. And I think the reason I love it so much is that even with all the plot twists and turns, it hasn't lost any of its intensity or suspense after 20+ viewings. It's hilarious, thrilling, engrossing, and sees career best performances from Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon. Jack Nicholson is excellent, and if you had told me 8 years ago that this wasn't Leonardo DiCaprio's finest work I wouldn't have believed you (the man really is the GOAT). Scorcese's most entertaining and rewatchable film, and I stick by that even in a post WOWS world.

The Prestige is still really great tho, and it's probably Nolan's best work. I don't want to shortchange it at all.

my kneejerk reaction is to say "YES IT'S HEAVY HANDED" but i think it sticks out so badly because, well, the cgi is so s-----y. if there was somehow an actual rat they could have incorporated, i'd be down. as it is, it seems like a tacked-on thing a fan could have made.

Really tough but The Prestige. I can still remember seeing both of these films in theaters in October 2006. Both were also first day blu-ray/dvd purchases and both are probably in my top 10 of all-time.

Sidenote- Speaking of top 10 all-time Zodiac dropped 3-4 months later. Pretty great time for films.

@M Solo where do you think the prestige ranks in nolan's catalog? obviously TDKR is first, but is this second?
